The Articles of Confederation - IV: Constitutional Convention - Extra History

Comments

Lil's adorable. But don't tell her I said that. :3

Extra History

If you wound up checking out Cody's channel, I hope you enjoyed it!

Extra History

I'll talk about it in Lies, but yeah. I cut it to wrap up the series at four episodes so we could do Kamehameha.

Extra History

I found the Yankee-Pennamite Wars particularly amusing, because they were already going at it when the Revolutionary Wars started, and basically agreed to a ceasefire so they could all go fight Britain instead. Once that war was over, they went right back to fighting each other.

Extra History

That's why we've got to study our history, so we understand what we've been through.

Extra History

But that only means we're ready to start a new thing!

Extra History

Yeah, Connecticut basically claimed the it had no defined Western border, ergo its territory stretched all the way to the West (the Mississippi River if not the Pacific). They actually fought with Pennsylvania over (what is now) Pennsylvania's southern territory no less than three times: look up the Yankee-Pennamite Wars for more info on that!

Extra History

Fitting. ;D

Extra History

I think of Hamilton in much the same way I think of Cicero: totally a jerk, but I love him.

Extra History

It will be covered in Lies, yes! The short answer is that I cut it for space reasons, because I didn't have time to go in depth about it and hit all the points I felt I needed to in order to wrap up the series, and I felt it was better to cut it entirely than to give it an inaccurately summarized portrayal.

Extra History

Lil is the master of disappearing. ;)

Extra History

Yeah, this one seemed like a perfect opportunity for some Alternate History since the Articles are such an odd part of, er, regular history.

Extra History

YouTube is such a rude place, so many people barging in on so many other people just to increase their own fanbase! (Seriously though, it was fun working with him.)

Extra History

Thank you! It was fun working with Cody on this one. :)

Extra History

You're safe! Honor preserved!

Extra History

Wonderful as always, and thank yu for telling us about the Alternat History Hub. I get the impression that it won't just be more fiction, for instance the stuff targeted at some southerners who are still cranky abotu the "War of Northern Aggression." They will actually help me understand and appreciate better ... the path that history has actually taken. :)

Bill Lemmond

So, we're not going to mention Shays' Rebellion? That's kind of a big event to leave out.

Peter Melling

I love the instand book fort at the end.

Tempestfury

States fighting each other neither began nor ended with the Civil War. State borders nearly caused more than one fight. It's why states like Ohio and Wisconsin have the borders they do. The states wanted port cities or access to rivers for trade. We may see that again over resources within our lifetimes.

Jason Youngberg

After nearly 300 years, we still haven't figured out that we're all in this together.

Michael Jebbett

Speaking in my unofficial Capacity as an Alternate Historian, I say this Series has given me an idea or Two, in addition to Educating me about a Topic most of us Europeans are ignorant about.

@Justin: A period of Two Weeks

RMS Oceanic

Not according to Connecticut! For various reasons, both Pennsylvania and Connecticut had claims on what is now northern Pennsylvania. (Pennsylvania also claimed a bit of New York.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Penncolony.png

Timothy McLean

You, you stopped! Nooooooooo.

Dani McKenzie

What the heck is a 'fortnight'?

Justin M.

How do Pennsylvania and Connecticut go to war over a border?!? They don't even SHARE a border!

Justin M.

I think it's time for a nice, humble USA USA USA USA USA!

Richard Fejdasz

You're not alone in believing Brexit will have negative consequences, RMS Oceanic; I myself have my Reasons for preferring that we Remain in the EU, and that the Recession of 2008 ~ which Caused the Rise of the Right that eventually Resulted in Brexit ~ had never happened. I'm not going to say what those Reasons are, though.

Martin Verran

Humorously enough, Alexander Hamilton's first's speech at the Constitutional Convention was about three weeks into the conference itself. Hamilton launched into a sweeping speech, a full six hours long, about radical ideas like erasing state boundaries and a single, ultra-powerful central government. When he was finished, no one applauded (awkward coughs were not written in the historical record, but I choose to believe they were there), because he was pretty much saying: "Remember that government we fought a revolution against? That's what we need!" Hamilton was a strong monarchist and believed in a monarchy for the United States.

what time is the q & a

schuyler

Great episode. Why no mention of Shays' Rebellion? Will that be covered in Lies?

Connor Raikes

There's a lot of good stuff here, but my main thought is... oh god that instant book fort is adorable.

Nessf

An Alternate History Hub cameo in an Extra History video? *fan squeeing intensifies*

KC

It's not that mysterious. First, their majority isn't particularly big, and if the country voted the way the polls suggested, they'd get a humungous majority. Second, Brexit wraps up in 2019, one year before they had to have another election. This buys them another two years to put some distance between Brexit and the next election if negative consequences start manifesting. Which I believe it will.

RMS Oceanic

Wow, great men in interesting times! I knew the names but I had no idea how important Hamilton, Madison and Washington were to the process of the Constitution :) Also, YAY CODY! I love Alternate History Hub and the video he mentions is really interesting :D He also has issues with people barging in at the end of videos xD

SparkyDJM1

This was amazing! Great job guys! Loved that end bit...

Elijah Irons

*Pauses the video to see which states signed the peace treaty. Sees that their home state is among them.* Thank god. All right, carry on.

First Like and First Comment Four Times in a Row for this Series! Yaaaaay!!! This comes a Fortnight before we Brits face the unenviable Task of going to our Local Polling Stations to Vote for either a new Prime Minister or to keep the One we're stuck with at the Moment. Precisely why this is happening is a bit of a Mystery to me, considering the Government already has an outright Majority in the House of Commons.
