In a very real way Javert represents justice while Jean Val Jean represents mercy. A lot of this movie is basically a play on justice versus Mercy. Javer really can’t even understand Mercy at all. Valjean is a criminal and therefore he hates him.

He's pretty experienced with TV at this point, though I'm not sure if those shows were before or after he filmed this. If you haven't watched Schmigadoon it's great and he has a few great songs, plus the show is amazing. Just one small thing, the end of his name is pronounced like eight, not eet.

2025-06-09 19:21:57 +0000 UTCI think that the rough that Anna is adding with the song is a good choice, having read the book, she's a desperate woman, so it shows that she suffers so much that the universe of musical cant bear to keep up with her grief. Though i know that its not healthy, i do think her being overwhelming is great. FYI, Les Misérables is inspired from real stories, Victor Hugo visited and observed these social classes, and there really was a man that made as much as prison as Jean Val Jean for stealing a piece of bread. And im a big reader, but it was the first time i reacted to the death of a character when Fantine died. The book version is better, the musical removes the stakes and the sadness of the characters' story. But yeah, its really heavy, even more when you know that at least 90% of the story is accurate. Not in a way where the plot is true, but that each character and situation are things that happened at that time. Even the scene you think is way too exaggerated and unrealistic happened. Also, Javert is a representation of the inflexible law meeting the human psyche, thats why he take his own life, he cant understand why a criminal can be a good person. (I know all that cuz i had an essay on the book this semester)
