Bara Style Challenge - Patrick Fillion
Added 2024-01-08 15:30:02 +0000 UTCWhat can I say about Patrick Fillion? He's a legend. You probably know him as the creator of Class Comics too. Of course, he is noteworthy for being incredibly talented with a unique and instantly recognizable style but he's also a fellow Canadian. Not only that, but a fellow Québécois to boot! He's definitely one of my biggest inspirations as I have discovered him a long time ago (when I technically wouldn't have been allowed to look at his art... Oops lol) and he's the first gay artist that made me go "Wait... What? There are people who draw smut for a living?" Ngl, to this day, one of the highlights of my career in adult comics is getting followed back by him on Twitter. And no, I will never stop fangirling over that.
I think I did pretty okay here. But there were a lot of challenges. I'm seeing a pattern where the three things that are the hardest to translate into other styles or just find references for are the stubble, the freckles, and the hairstyle. One of Patrick's main characters is also a hunky redhead (Naked Justice) and I didn't want to accidentally make Finn look too much like him either. But looking back, he might have been one of the reasons why my protagonist is a redhead haha. I'm noticing with a lot of these styles that redheads don't have freckles (which is understandable since they can be a pain to draw over and over) so I left them out here too. To me, this style is reminiscent of 90s and early 2000s comic books and I think that's part of why it feels so familiar even if you've never seen it before. It made me think a lot about volume which is good preparation for one of the later (more intimidating) styles.

The musculature, the veins, the nips, the coloring style, the the pose, even the facial structure remind of Fillion's work. Like you, I saw Patrick's work before I was really supposed to and it had a huge influence on me and what I find attractive, so seeing Finnn in his style is quite fun!
