Bara Style Challenge - Suyohara

It is very likely that you know Suyohara if you follow any bara-sharing social media profiles, but perhaps you know him better for his Dom and Steen comics. He's definitely one of the big successful bara artists out there and one of my personal favorites. I really love his shading style and have yet to crack the code on it, I'm afraid. His style is very recognizable, featuring a specific anime/manga aesthetic that doesn't look exactly like your usual bara art and that borders on BL or yaoi with the long pointy faces. He does a lot of fan art, but is really good at translating different characters to his own style and ngl I'd sell my left nut to see him draw the Ero Angels.

I would consider my take on this one to be somewhat of a failure. I don't think it looks like his art all that much, but to be fair, I was expecting it to be difficult because a lot of the shapes that he uses are very foreign to me (I practically never draw "pointy" characters haha). I think I've made the shading too soft, the linework too think and the color palette I chose isn't very Suyo either. Also, I'm realizing that if Suyohara drew Finn, he'd probably give him much more muscle definition in the linework, like a proper 8-pack and much more defined obliques. I considered redrawing it again and again to make it better, but I've decided to stop here for two reasons:
1. I have learned a lot from my mistakes on this one and I want to acknowledge them.
2. I've got other shit to do. Making a comic takes a lot of time, guys! 🤣

So I hope you like this semi-Suyohara attempt and that you're ready for the Robin Morningwood version of Finn 'cause I feel like this one is gonna be really fun!

I think Suyo's style is perhaps the hardest for a western artist. It is VERY manga in the art and the colors do most of the work for the volume. Cannot wait to see the others !

Nicoclaws

Ooooh I'm super grateful for the encouragement, but I don't want you to think I'm beating myself up over this. My take on Suyo's art *is* a failure as a copy, but I'm not a failure myself for making it. I had fun challenging myself and I'm simply self-aware enough to recognize the limit of my current skills. And I'm certain I'll meet that limit again in this challenge *cough* Celery *cough* but I intend to keep failing and learning to improve my own art too.

Cabaret Bara

I've spent a lot of time watching Suyo's process videos and in my own leisurely drawing trying to replicate some of his work and IT. IS. HARD. He does what he does so well (like how you do what you do so well). Don't feel like a failure though, as this is just for fun and learning lessons. You do what you do so well, another artist would also struggle to replicate what you do with your lines, facial expressions, and colors. So good on you for trying and moving on. Lots more great art to make, so keep your head up!

Jarrod

Thank you! And yes, I'm not doing this to flex that I can copy anyone's style - I can't. It's about challenging myself to try and have fun with it while still learning what I can from it and bringing back that experience into my own art style to improve further.

Cabaret Bara

Haha thanks. I do have a lot of work before I can truly understand his rendering, but I'll probably try again in the future.

Cabaret Bara

Heyo! I think you have a good mindset; keep this a fun bonus activity, and don't take it too seriously, mate! I'm enjoying the hell out of it so far.

Griffin Barrows

Oooo, you got the render great!! Omg your hand my be dying, thank you for your sacrifice 🫡💜

SpicyRamen

Thank you! I gave it my best shot. Not 100% satisfied, but it was a very good learning experience.

Cabaret Bara

Thank you, you're really sweet! I'm sure he would have plenty of very valid criticism, but I'm still glad I did it, it helped me learn a lot.

Cabaret Bara

Haha I think it's natural for most of us to just consume the art without seeking the artist behind it every time. Especially since A LOT of art repost accounts on social media just repost stuff without crediting the artists. It's a small world, but also, it's a struggle lol!

Cabaret Bara

Hahaha omg you're too sweet, thank you. I'm afraid Dom and Finn would be too much himbo in one pairing though lol.

Cabaret Bara

Hahaha plot twist: Dom has been a high functioning Heartbroken the whole time.

Cabaret Bara

Haha as long as the himbo is himbo-ing, I consider it good enough to post at the very least :P thank you

Cabaret Bara

Oh, that is really good!

happilyevil321

You did so good! Suyohara would be proud of this :)

Tay Harman

Now that I've searched a bit, I've actually seen a lot of these artists' works without knowing their names ! It's a small gay world ! 😮 Keep up the good work !

Félix, from Paris

Whew Steen (Soldier 13) has some competition now, no way Dom the demon does not notice Suyo!Finn.

Allan Meyer

Actually, I think you did pretty well! I can easily see him riding that big red demon!

Adam Lunter

Suyo's style is really tricky but I think you still did a good job, I mean, Finn is still hot so it's a win on my part
