Waifu Wonderland will continue development!
Added 2025-02-05 18:38:57 +0000 UTCI am very happy to report that I've finally got RPG Maker MV working on my laptop! So development of Waifu Wonderland will continue! First I'll talk about what happened, and then how it's changed current plans. I'll still be doing a release this month as planned. Here we go!
How!? -
First, how did I suddenly fix the issue? Well, it's a somewhat long story. I've been working on transferring what I can to my laptop for a while now, and recently I picked up some HDD docks that convert a normal HDD or SSD into a USB drive. This way I can have access to all of my files without needing a full desktop anymore. So I was going through and testing each one to see what each had on it, that way I could label the anti-static bags I'll be storing them in. Since while I got 2 docks, I have 6 total HDD/SSD. So I can't use them all at once. Anyway, this was going smoothly, when I had a weird thought. What if I tried booting up the SSD with windows on it from my desktop and tried booting MV from there? Maybe that would be enough to emulate the desktop environment that it already runs on? And of course, it worked! I was able to boot up MV! I have absolutely no idea why this works and booting from the laptop itself doesn't. My best guess is some kind of driver on my laptop creates some kind of conflict and prevents it from opening. The important part is that it works now.
Ironically, the day I discovered all of this, is the same day I got a notification that MZ was on sale for more than half off. So I went ahead and picked up MZ. I don't think I'll see it for cheaper than this anytime soon. I don't plan on switching Waifu Wonderland over to MZ unless something goes horribly wrong again, mainly because there's a lot of scripts that I use that I'm not sure if they'll work in MZ. I may try for fun to convert it and see what happens, I just don't plan on it and don't expect the scripts to work if I do. I mainly wanted to have it as backup, and as a possibility for the engine I use for 3D.
New Plans For Development -
And now for how this affects current plans and development moving forward.
To start, we'll talk about the plans for the current update. I've decided to just finish what I'm working on now, then go back and start adding in artwork. Once I'm caught up with the artwork, I'll continue adding stuff from there. So this is the newest progress.
Add final lab character (done)
Do lab ending (done)
Finish Angela's storyline (done)
Add pregnancy and new scene for working girls (done)
Add new scenes and outfits for Rinko, Freya, and Aoyagi (in progress)
Add 7 more rare women (done)
Add Office Job
I decided to stop adding new content there. Since I was gone most of last week and weekend, and then have had to work my day job and do some of the final preparations for my move during the week, not much was able to get done since the last update. I'm planning on finishing up the programming this weekend, and with any luck I'll be able to get some artwork done before early access releases.
I had considered doing more programming, but there's already 20 unique pieces of artwork that need to be made, and far more than that including color and pregnancy variants. You probably also noticed that it says that I added 7 more rare women, but I initially said that all 9 were added. Since there's already so much placeholder artwork, I decided to take out 2 of them until their artwork is done. The rare women are going to be very rare, so I wanted to minimize the number that people ran into without artwork. One of them didn't even have a basic character design yet, and I'd like to be able to go back and rewrite the scene to better fit the actual finalized design. I had considered cutting all of them without artwork, but decided against it. Mainly because they give bonus exp and some money, which can help to reduce grinding, and I thought it would be a fun teaser to keep them in. I've also had a lot of people confused about not seeing anyone other than Goth Seika, so I wanted more in the game to better show off the system.
You likely noticed that I've also removed the random beach babes too, even though I had been working on them. I was trying to work through it and include them without artwork, but it was an unbelievable pain trying to keep track of all of the variants without any artwork. I kept messing things up and it was taking way too long. So I just cut them until I get the artwork done. It'll be much easier to do once I can make sure I'm including the right variation, and there's no real reason I have to include them right now anymore.
With any luck, I'll be able to knock out some of this artwork before release. I'm focusing on doing the lab stuff first. Since that's the main storyline, it really needs it the most. From there, I'll probably just work on the artwork I want to do at any given time. I've found that having more options and being more flexible leads to me being more productive, so I don't want to have a set order to do things in.
And then you may have noticed I changed the office section to just adding the office job. I included some very high priced items in some of the quests I added, as well as made the GFE scene very expensive. All because I had planned on adding the office with this update and wanted to be sure people had some high ticket items to spend money on. Otherwise the office job would have been a bit pointless. However, I didn't want to have to rush in the office ladies and everything. So I just added in the job itself, and will expand it in a later update. This way it wont have to just be random office ladies. It can have some named characters and have more of a story for the office, like I had originally planned. I'll go more into this farther down, but the hospital and office are the main priorities for the next content update. As of now, I'm just going to be working on artwork until I get through all of the content in the game. I don't want to be adding more placeholder stuff right now.
Depending on how people react to the placeholder artwork, I may do this again though. Where I do a ton of programming, and then add the artwork in later. Doing things this way is much closer to normal game development, and it gives me the opportunity to add a lot more connected and complex content. Like if I hadn't been able to do the programming for the secondary outfits along with the storylines, they would have been disconnected and isolated unlocks. Having things kind of build on each other and be interconnected always makes for a better game. Especially in an open world game like Waifu Wonderland. Making things connected gives people a reason to engage with more of the game. So I want to be able to do more stuff like that. However, if people have a viscerally negative reaction to the placeholder artwork, I'll only be doing releases with finished artwork again. I may end up having a poll a little while after the game releases, once people have had the chance to play through the content and decide what they think. We'll see what happens though.
Future Plans -
Before I talk about anything else, I'd like to clarify that I am still going to be working on Waifu Wonderland 3D as well. They'll be developed in tandem with some connections, but you wont need to play both or anything. Like mentioned in the announcement, they were made to scratch different creative itches, so they wont take time away from each other.
Anyway, now that I know I can continue developing Waifu Wonderland, future plans for what I want to add have changed. So here's the new current goals for the game. A lot of it is the same as before.
Add Random Beach Babes
Open the Hospital with Random Nurses and a named female doctor
Finish the office building and add in Random Office Ladies, an office storyline, and a female boss
Add Seika's final scene and pregnancy
Add Minori (Akari's daughter) and her storyline
Add the rest of the MMC characters
Add collectable sets into the newly added areas (Train station, office building, hospital, etc)
Add the gloryhole
Add the last 2 rare women
And here is where I'm going to call the apartment tier complete. The next big thing I'll add is the house tier, and from there, I'll only be adding content you need the house to unlock until it's largely complete. This is more in-line with what I originally planned for the game. And here's the early plans for the housing tier.
Add the new neighborhood and house tier
New scene for Mirai
Touko (a neighborhood MILF in your new neighborhood)
Random MILFs
House Neighbor and Neighbor's daughter and storyline for them (converted from the apartment neighbor)
Add quest for each individual EDB moving to the house, and add another scene for each of them. (this will be a LOT more involved than it sounds and will effectively be the main story section for the housing tier)
That's not everything I want to add to the house tier, that's just where I'm going to start.
And here are some longer term things I want to add in. These will be labeled with what tier they are.
House tier -
Convention event with cosplayers to seduce
New scenes for the starters
Ability to buy a car
Upscale house tier (everything below is for this tier)
New part of the Lab Storyline that takes place after 3D
New job storyline with a better job and new boss.
New scenes for the starters
New scene for Mirai
Mansion tier -
Final part of the Lab Storyline
Final job storyline with a better job and new boss.
Final scenes for the starters
Final scene for Mirai
And that's a very rough and basic outline of what I want to add to the game. Of course, there will be more new women added, new scenes for existing characters, and new questlines added throughout. I don't want to go into specific plans, since that wouldn't be much fun to just kind of tell you everything that's going to be added, but also because things can change. I may have plans for something now and then end up changing the plan later. The mansion tier is planned to be the final tier of the game, and where I want to end the game. That's still a ways off though, but maybe not as far off as people may think. The higher tiers are meant to have fewer women added overall, so it may end up coming faster than you'd expect. I have a specific timeframe in mind, but that largely depends on how busy my day job is and how much support the game gets. Of course the more support the game gets, the more time I'll dedicate to working on it, and the more consistent my day job is, the more I'll be able to work on it as well.
With any luck, there wont be any more surprises and I'll be able to just continue to develop the game and go back to making normal update posts.
Lastly, instead of the next version being v0.5, it's going to be v0.4. I plan on having full version numbers at the completion of each tier. So once all of the apartment tier content is done, it will be v1.0.
I just wanted to show people a more thorough overlook of what I have planned for the entire game now that I'm both able to continue developing, and have decided to finish the game through my original plans.
I hope you look forward to seeing Waifu Wonderland become what it was originally meant to be!
