Why US History?
This is a temporary measure: not all future surveys are going to be limited to one area or concept. But we do want to make sure that we are giving ourselves the opportunity to cover a wide variety of history, and while we're very proud that our patrons (both in suggesting and in voting) have embraced so many topics that are off-the-beaten path of Western history curricula, we also think it's important that Extra History provide material for students whose first introduction to history comes through a "standard" US history curriculum. Unfortunately, all of the US history topics we've included in our votes have come in last.
We've heard from so many people that never loved history before, or even actively hated it, that Extra History changed the way they see history. It made them more interested to go learn more on their own. That's exactly what we want to bring to sudents in US history courses. We certainly hope that if they love it enough, they'll stick around to learn about people like Admiral Yi and Suleiman the Magnificent. But we gotta start somewhere, and that 'somewhere' is most likely to be with their homework!
So even if you've heard these stories before, we hope that you will enjoy hearing them from us (and Walpole)!

2016-11-19 04:08:22 +0000 UTCThe internet has had a boner for Teddy for forever, I'd love a more in depth look at the articles instead of pandering to an already popular figure

2016-11-18 18:16:37 +0000 UTCI love Crash Course, but I do think we do things differently than they do and that both options deserve to be made. We have a different perspective than they do on some historical topics, and we also tend to tackle our topics as a mini-series whereas they might cover the same topic in one episode. They do it extremely well, but we have extra room for storytelling and detail that I think we put to good use!

2016-11-16 21:49:33 +0000 UTC*I* (Soraya) very much do, but this month James was suggesting the topic votes again and he has his own set of things he wants to discuss. :) The US-History limited vote was something we've been discussing for a long time, and seeing how the Underground Railroad vote turned out clinched our decision to have one. Prior to that, we'd been considering an all-women vote but Catherine the Great won on her own. Basically, we're saving the "only this topic" themed votes for situations where we're concerned that a particular type of history CAN'T win on its own, but US History is the only one so far where we've seen so much disinterest that we felt like we really had to force it. I think that's unfortunate, but I'm glad the vote has turned out to have as much interest for people as it did.

2016-11-16 03:34:08 +0000 UTCI voted for Articles. It's an area of history not as well known as the others and I hope it wins

2016-11-14 18:36:02 +0000 UTCI'm pretty sure that if the entire Zulu Empire, the first crusade and the opium war could all be done in six episodes, so can George Washington. The lead-up to the civil war is the only thing that seems too big to me.

2016-11-14 17:47:43 +0000 UTCArticles of Confederation and Washington get my votes. The Washington one I assume will touch on his involvement with the Seven Years War as well as the War of Independence. I'd have added the intrigue and tragedy of the Garfield administration, but I haven't pledged enough to add topics in the hat

2016-11-14 02:59:57 +0000 UTCOr keep making interesting series and link them to Crash Course US History instead? :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6E9WU9TGrec&list=PL8dPuuaLjXtMwmepBjTSG593eG7ObzO7s I can see the point of wanting to do US history yourself though, since it seems you're all american :) Good luck.

2016-11-13 17:34:04 +0000 UTCThe Articles of Confederation (basically the Constitution before the Constitution) and the president who got a stuffed toy named after him get my vote.

2016-11-13 15:20:38 +0000 UTCI'm surprised that Underground Railroad isn't on the ballot, since you wanted to clear the misconceptions when we were discussing it in the last vote. When I said US topics are unlikely to win in the aftermath of the last vote ( underground railroad was in last place by a significant margin), I didn't think you would actually go through with my suggestion of an US history vote only. Despite it limiting patreons options, I kinda like having themed votess like the Economics and Science one or this one.

2016-11-13 01:39:11 +0000 UTCEH has already done a great job looking at less common topics. Does any western school cover Justinian or the South Sea Bubble? Not to my knowledge. Makes sense to cover something a little more on the path from time to time.

2016-11-12 23:52:42 +0000 UTCI recall awhile back, Dan mentioning that if they'd to do extra history on a president, they'd want to make it be done to Teddy. I'm Ready for Teddy!

2016-11-12 22:38:40 +0000 UTCEven other people on the same continent might not know your history well. Canadian reporting in here, and while we got a bit more than Modest did, I still don't know very much about most of these topics.

2016-11-12 20:09:21 +0000 UTCWe explain at the bottom of the post why we specifically want to cover topics that are talked about in school! In short: students (and teachers) watch this show, it's been a great resource for some of them, and while we will continue to cover various parts of the world in the larger run of the series, we don't want to keep leaving out students because we ONLY cover more esoteric topics. Also Modest makes a good point that what's common history in one part of the world is not covered much or at all in other parts, and we want to introduce all parts of our global audience to new things!

2016-11-12 19:58:50 +0000 UTCI can't get the Theme setting to work for me with Free Online Surveys today. Not sure if it's a brain fart or if it's currently a broken feature, but that's why you're seeing the broken image!

2016-11-12 18:53:46 +0000 UTCIs it just me, or is the background image for the vote broken? Like, the poll itself works, but the background is just white with a small 'broken image' icon in the upper left.

2016-11-12 18:53:05 +0000 UTCI think if that's the winner, we'd probably pick a specific event (or connected series of events) within the antebellum period.

2016-11-12 18:52:46 +0000 UTCThat's good; Washington, for example, would absolutely justify a full 12 episodes, if not more.

2016-11-12 18:51:27 +0000 UTCFor Antebellum -- you could do ten episodes on 1848-61 alone (the period between the Mexican American War and secession)
