Nicholas Barbon is here to help England recover from disaster... and make obscene amounts of money. Who says you can't do both?

So... it was Barbon?

It wouldn't surprise me to find out that Mr Barbon was Mr. Blunt's childhood hero. He died less than 20 years before the whole south sea bubble - long enough for Mr Blunt to have read and understood what Mr Barbon was talking about. And boy oh boy do Mr Blunt's plans strike me as the dealings of a man who understands that money is a sort of shared dream, not just gold or silver in a vault somewhere.

Barbon: what Walpole would like if Walpole were inestimably fabulous.

I mean, he was certainly behind it all, just as he's behind literally everything that has ever happened in the course of human history. So technically correct.

Barbon a.k.a. Walpole the 2nd, Walpole II, or Walpole and the Chamber of Secrets

I'm still saying it was Walpole. It's always Walpole.

Oh, just you wait till next week. We're going to meet a fellow that James has wanted to talk about ever since the South Sea series... he wasn't directly involved in that, but his hijinks are going to seem miiighty familiar.

We've all been basking in that name since James first sent us the script. It is amazing.

Damnit, Tim! <3
Also mispronunciation is Daniel's schtick. I once called him (an American) out for pronouncing "granary" the British way and he told me it wouldn't be fair if he didn't mispronounce every culture's words equally.

I really hope this series doesn't skip over the tally sticks. They were a fascinating form of intermediate fiat money that embody one of the foundations of paper money (that it has some value since it's accepted by the gov't for payment of taxes).

I really hope this series doesn't skip over the tally sticks. They were a fascinating form of intermediate fiat money that embody a lot of what was going on with early currency ... and in the end they actually caught on fire and burned parliament to the ground. An amazing part of the story.
Something I wrote a while ago on tally sticks:

Helping England recover from disaster and making a boatload of profit in the bargain? It sounds like Barbon was Walpole's childhood hero.
