It's at least possible!

Nessf

So... it was Barbon?

Extra History

It wouldn't surprise me to find out that Mr Barbon was Mr. Blunt's childhood hero. He died less than 20 years before the whole south sea bubble - long enough for Mr Blunt to have read and understood what Mr Barbon was talking about. And boy oh boy do Mr Blunt's plans strike me as the dealings of a man who understands that money is a sort of shared dream, not just gold or silver in a vault somewhere.

Nessf

Glad you enjoyed it!

Barbon: what Walpole would like if Walpole were inestimably fabulous.

Extra History

I mean, he was certainly behind it all, just as he's behind literally everything that has ever happened in the course of human history. So technically correct.

Extra History

Another great episode.

Dani McKenzie

Barbon a.k.a. Walpole the 2nd, Walpole II, or Walpole and the Chamber of Secrets

Marcus Berg

I'm still saying it was Walpole. It's always Walpole.

Michael Waisfeld

It's always Walpole.

Jonathan Luoto

Oh, just you wait till next week. We're going to meet a fellow that James has wanted to talk about ever since the South Sea series... he wasn't directly involved in that, but his hijinks are going to seem miiighty familiar.

Extra History

We've all been basking in that name since James first sent us the script. It is amazing.

Extra History

Yes, sorry about that! When I left I forgot to instruct the team to keep an eye on our Patreon list for new sponsors. :( Thank you for being patient with us about it, though!

Extra History

I'm afraid we do skip over tally sticks, but thank you for posting your article about them!

Extra History

Damnit, Tim! <3 Also mispronunciation is Daniel's schtick. I once called him (an American) out for pronouncing "granary" the British way and he told me it wouldn't be fair if he didn't mispronounce every culture's words equally.

Extra History

I really hope this series doesn't skip over the tally sticks. They were a fascinating form of intermediate fiat money that embody one of the foundations of paper money (that it has some value since it's accepted by the gov't for payment of taxes).

Matt Collins

I really hope this series doesn't skip over the tally sticks. They were a fascinating form of intermediate fiat money that embody a lot of what was going on with early currency ... and in the end they actually caught on fire and burned parliament to the ground. An amazing part of the story. Something I wrote a while ago on tally sticks: <a href="http://beforeitsnews.com/alternative/2012/03/the-secret-history-of-government-debt-tally-sticks-1859854.html" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://beforeitsnews.com/alternative/2012/03/the-secret-history-of-government-debt-tally-sticks-1859854.html</a>

Matt Collins

Can we just take a moment to bask in the glory of that name?

Alex Bryson

Helping England recover from disaster and making a boatload of profit in the bargain? It sounds like Barbon was Walpole's childhood hero.

Timothy McLean

More like mer-CAN'T-alism, amiright? I'll see myself out.

Timothy McLean

Isn't it always Walpole???

Kathyrne

In "mercantilism" emphasis is on the second syllable: "merCANtilism"

Zachary Weiss

This episodes are so awesome! And it's very nice to learn about how paper money came to be. Oh, hey! My name is in the sponsors list finally!

MasterAce

ahh that time period in england where puritan names were the thing!

Adam "Lux-Vertas" Youdontneedtoknowmysurname

Was it Walpole?
