Korea: Admiral Yi - Lies - Extra History

Was Yi's life really the Confucian parable that it seemed? And was Walpole behind it all?

Korea: Admiral Yi - Lies - Extra History

Comments

James is off traveling and doing James things again so I can't check with him! But I'll bet you could find out. I'd be interested to hear if you look into it!

Extra History

Hey, I just wanted to say thank you for doing these "lies" episodes. It means a lot to me to see how much effort y'all put into research and checking sources. One question I had that wasn't addressed in the episode: how certain is it that Yi actually fired the shot that killed the enemy commander in that naval engagement?

Yeah, I get what you're saying. It's a minor quibble. As long as it works for you, that's all that counts.

Jason Youngberg

Robert Walpole, Where ever Extra history goes you won't be far behind.

Michael William Hamilton II

It's connected to a tiny motor that is supposed to make the oars turn.

Tenkja very mac

Martin Ockovsky

What would the solar panel be for?

Tristan Murphy

Sometimes we have to look at our favorites from the outside, too!

Extra History

Isn't it?! I love it, even though the solar panel doesn't work. :\

Extra History

I probably would've enjoyed this series a lot more if I wasn't so biased towards the Japanese >_<

Michael Waisfeld

That is a cool turtle ship model .

Tristan Murphy

I almost like lies more than the real episodes!

Tristan Murphy

I wouldn't argue against that! John Snow's map of the cholera outbreak was remarkably well put together. And Lil's done a great job of re-rendering them for the series!

Extra History

There is! And if you ever get the chance to pick it up yourself, it's a really interesting read. Like James said, Yi is much harder on himself than anyone writing about him.

Extra History

Are you telling me you're pumped for the Broad Street Pump?

Extra History

I wasn't a fan when James and Dan first decided on it, but it's grown on me. The title is attention-getting, and for some folks it's a necessary jolt to remind them that every history is going to be fleshed out to some degree with assumptions, prejudices, and - well-meaning or not - lies.

Extra History

I confess, I don't like you calling it "Lies". They seem more like honest mistakes than an intentional untruth.

Jason Youngberg

It's always important to treat first hand accounts of conflicts with a critical eye in the event of them overselling themselves (Churchill and Caesar spring to mind), so for a first hand account to be the most critical helps underline Yi's glowing reputation. On the subject of "This was totally his last wish guys for realsies", I'm fond of the Roman General Stilicho's account of the Emperor Theodosius' dying words, that not only should Stilicho be regent for the eight year old Honorius - which was already public record - but also the sixteen year old Arcadius. Many Constantinoplian eyebrows were raised at that one, and unlike Hideyoshi's push for peace it didn't take. I almost used the 'P' word to denote my excitement for the Broad Street Pump. Military History is fun, but it's important to remember it's one aspect of Humanity.

RMS Oceanic

I'm going to argue that the Broadstreet Pump was also a GIS solution

I knew it! Walpole, you brilliant fiend... Honestly couldn't wait for this episode of Lies, I knew you'd gotten some good sources, but the diary surprised me. I didn't think there was one.
