Vote on an Extra History Topic!
Added 2015-03-01 10:41:40 +0000 UTCTime to vote on what topics we'll cover for Extra History! We're trying a few new things this month, which I'll talk about in a bit, but for now I want to make sure you know where to go and when to do it by! LINK: http://svy.mk/1AWQAYh DEADLINE: Wednesday, March 4 at 11:59pm (Midnight!) Okay, time to talk about special initiatives! Some of these topics will seem familiar to those of you who've been with us for a while, because these are the last place finishers from the previous votes (plus this month's patron suggestion). Initially, we wanted to do this so that obscure topics that might be overlooked still had an opportunity to win... but then you folks voted on the South Sea Bubble of all things and now we just don't know what to make of you. All the same, we want those last place finishers to get their chance to prove they deserve a series of their own, so here they are, with all their moxie! Second, we're trying a new polling style suggested by a patron: approval voting. We were hearing a lot of you say "I really wanted to vote for both X and Y, but in the end I decided to pick Y!" This should make it easier on you, because now you CAN vote for both X and Y - in fact, we encourage you to! No more Sophie's Choice. Whatever subject attracts the greatest consensus will win the day... er, series. Hope that clarifies the reasons for this month's vote being a bit different than our previous ones, but if you have any questions, ask away in the comments!

Extra History
2015-03-08 02:53:04 +0000 UTCI remember coming across that story while doing some work on Ancient History a while back - in fact, if I remember correctly, the pirates gave his family a ransom and Caesar felt offended that they were giving him back so cheaply and forced the pirates to raise the price!

2015-03-07 13:26:44 +0000 UTCI've actually been surprised at the number of folks who don't know much about the most famous figures of history. Taking Caesar as our example, did you know that as a young man he was (allegedly) abducted by pirates? He convinced them that his family would pay a high price for his return, and demanded they treat him like a prince - which they did, and after his family paid ransom and the pirates released him, he used his knowledge of their location to turn around and wipe them out. I personally suspect Caesar made that story up himself in order to look awesome, but it's a good example of the fact that there are cool tidbits of information on the life and personality of even the most common subjects that we don't really know, even if we think we do. And - bias incoming! - I trust that James could bring those stories to life in a way that makes those familiar subjects fun to learn more about. Regarding the vote limit, I leave that up to the voters! Anyone who votes for all four is effectively canceling their own vote (but showing support for the topics, which is nice!) and anyone voting for three is still expressing something of value, i.e. that there is one particular subject they have no interest in whatsoever.

2015-03-04 15:11:13 +0000 UTCThe people vote for obscure/unpopular subjects because that guarantees them to get 100% new information out of the video. American Civil War won't appeal to people because they have already heard enough about it if they are american and they don't care if the are anything else. Sengoku Jidai/South Seas reads *ALL NEW THINGS YOU NEVER KNEW ABOUT* Life of Caesar reads *WHAT YOU ALREADY KNEW FROM SCHOOL + some other stuff*. Also ticking 3 or 4 subject defeats the point of the vote can't you lock it at 2?

2015-03-02 00:23:59 +0000 UTCI didn't realize that you could choose more than one until it was too late. Not that it matters. I'd have just selected all of the topics, as they're all interesting to me.

2015-03-01 23:35:50 +0000 UTCFixed a couple of errors with the survey this morning! - Voting results should now be displayed publicly. - Theodora is no longer being called Theodosia! No idea what my brain was thinking last night. - The "None of the Above" option has been changed to "None of These" since for some reason the option to lock it in the last place position didn't work. Not ideal but at least less irritating!

2015-03-01 20:16:21 +0000 UTCI like the ability to select multiple answers, but is there a setting to allow it to show percentages for open ended questions or is that just how surveymonkey works?

2015-03-01 17:07:30 +0000 UTCA suggestions for the next topic: World War II... from the point of view from the russians. We have tons of stories based on USA and even a few on the german side, but Russia was a major player in WWII, and because of the Cold War, almost nothing is said about it on the western.

2015-03-01 15:16:15 +0000 UTCThe poll is definitely working? I don't see any responses on the results page after voting. It's all zeros.
