Early Access! The Seminal Tragedy: Lies

Thank you for supporting Extra History! We hope you enjoy this early look at tomorrow's episode. As promised, James takes a frank look back on what he learned (including the mistakes we made) over the course of making this series. P.S. There's some suggested reading in the episode description, and we'll be recommending World War I games for you to try next week on James Recommends!

I greatly appreciate that y'all took the time to make it clear that not only is much of history unclear and biased by the perspective from which we view it, but also that the enormity of world affairs is so overwhelming. We only ever have people to face it with rather than the infallible heroes we're often taught historical figures were. It's good to be reminded that the people involved were still people with families and fears and flaws like the rest of us.

This video would be so valuable for anyone who's looking how to write a script, because of how you so detail what you decided to leave out of the main videos. From those videos I couldn't tell you did so much research! Also I love to see how honestly you aim to present yourselves. Especially for Patreon, it's more rewarding for us to be supporting somebody who cares so much about the quality of what they create that they will shoot down or explain the errors in the previous videos. Great work, definitely looking forward to the Sengoku Jidai.

This is just like those phone calls at the end of Magic School Bus episodes! Nice to see clarification on the more embellished points of the series.

Was thinking about what James said to do with this was a war where you didn't have to hate the other side, in light of the diplomats. In many ways, the world wars do represent this. You have cases of the soldiers of both sides stopping the fighting to go and sing Christmas carols together, where the German troops had unspoken agreements to not bomb the British during breakfast. At Gallipoli, when the light horse were charging to their pointless deaths, one of the Turkish men on the other side got up and shouted at the Anzacs to stop, visibly upset by the carnage. It was, in many ways, a very professional war. People killed each other because it was their job, often for a few yards of land.

Hi guys, I really appreciate the idea of discussing previous mistakes in an episode with a more dry and matter-of-fact format at the end of the series, in comparison to the rather emotional tone of the narration in the other episodes (sometimes even too emotional in my opinion). It gives the viewer the chace to take a step back, and it's a good show of honesty and humility on your part, so kudos for that! One more error to point out in today's video, still: at 4:35 you say Franz-Josef was Austria-Hungary's last emperor, and he wasn't. It's probably just a slip of the tongue for James, though. :-)

Matt Lakits doesn't have the mental energy to update their Patreon name anymore, but still listens to every episode avidly!

I was very interested to see what you meant by "lies", and I have to say most of what you did was just helping to explain the events of the time. Totally forgivable. Thanks so much for adding more of the little details in here too. I know we're just getting started, but I am enjoying Extra History more and more with every episode. Thanks so much for this!!

I meant that you would make the new fixed version and maybe link to it in the video description. But I know that's stupid, it would take unnecessary much time. I just hope that next time there won't be those mistakes. I'm just weird and I really like something it hurts me to know that there is something "wrong" with it. Even if it's a tiny mistake.

You can't edit the content of a Youtube video after it's posted (imagine if someone with a random viral video could just sell the video space and replace it with a McDonald's ad), so sadly no.

Extra History

Please reach 10,000/month guys. I'll double my pledge to see twice as many episodes.

Bryan Austin

Thank you. I guess there is no way your team has the time to fix the mistakes you've talked about at the beginning right? I want to rewatch it and it would be nice knowing that's it all correct (I don't mean the "lies").

Martin Ockovsky

We need more Lies! Never thought I'd say that.

Mask

Well done. I liked it a lot!

Claus Larsen

I think that every history book in the world should be this honest. Thanks for taking the time to do this series and to add the little extras as well as clarification. You're doing great job :)

Tammy Spiller

I'm pretty sure every history book ever should require a video like this from now on.

Dave Hoyt

Oh, James, "Lies" is such a strong word for the little mistakes you made. You got the important points. Great series! Thanks

Steven
