That was unfortunately the case with a lot of diplomats. That Russian diplomat we mentioned (the one who dies of a heart attack), Nicholas Hartwig, was also guilty of feeding his government exaggerated reports about Serbia's love and loyalty for Russia in the years prior to his death (and imminent war), which may have given Russian further reason to feel obligated to protect Serbia from the Austrians.

2014-09-28 03:19:02 +0000 UTCOh man, you guys left out that the French Ambassador to Russia had basically gone rogue and contrary to the explicit instructions of his government told the Russians that they had a blank check. He did this because he's part of a faction in France that feels that war with Germany is inevitable and that the disparity between France's strength and Germany's strength is only going to get greater. He wanted a war, and when France told him to pour water on the flames he poured gasoline.
