This is why Toriyama kept going when he originally meant to stop and kept bringing Goku back each time. He is the face of the franchise, the main hero of the OG, the fan favorite and "the hope of the universe" and all that. If you think about it, Toriyama speaks to the audience through Goku and him returning to save the world each time is like Toriyama responding to the audience's wishes.
