Yes, they had a good relationship when they were young. We understand that she feels abandoned and it's a logical reason for Mai to hate Maki, but Maki didn't have a normal life at home as well because of her family. Maybe if Maki would have stayed at home for Mai, she would resent Mai. Now, it's the other way around. There was just no good outcome in this situation. I have been thinking about this episode yesterday and I understand Mai, but I also understand Maki. I hope we'll see more of Mai's good charactistics, because I'm sure she isn't that bad of a person. I hope she can improve her relationship with Maki in the end. This is Maaike by the way (the girlfriend)

Mai didn't hate Maki before she left, they were close sisters. She resents her because she left her and they made her life hell to compensate. She would've been fine just being a servant but was instead forced to fight curse because of Maki's decision.
I agree she's still unlikable and selfish but Maki did basically abandon her.
