The Meowban brothers fight is one of my least favorites, but it still has some good Zoro character moments! It's so cute how he started out thinking he's a lone wolf, but time and time again he puts himself in harm's way to protect people, especially his crew. Kuro is also a good foil/lesson for Luffy about the values of a true captain, as most of the enemies in the East Blue are. And they're totally Dragonball style enemies, lol, I never really thought about it before! But it makes sense, because I think the Syrup Village arc is a lot of Oda trying to riff on shonen tropes, though it doesn't come off as strongly as in other arcs since it's so early in the series. The sound design is crazy though, that sound track in the beginning of ep 14 is so menacing... if nothing else, he's really good at getting into Kaya's head to manipulate her ;; Sick final shot of Luffy too. I feel you about this part being kinda slow though. Sometimes I love when the anime slows down and gives you a chance to try to figure out what everyone is thinking, but the shots go kind of long here for sure. Dont worry, imo this arc is when you feel the drag the most in the East Blue. It picks up again in a few eps for sure (and until then although there are a lot of long shots I think the art looks really good), and then around ep 30 is when it starts to go nuts. Personally I didn't feel truly hooked on OP/understand its potential until eps 35-37. The last couple little arcs of the East Blue will feel like they go very fast at that point.
