Chapter 65 - Teaser!

Still working on this chapter, but wanted to drop the teaser before the new year. My plan was to write all day and ideally finish the chapter, but then I had an emergency estate planning appointment. Guy is 89 and having brain surgery on Friday and needed everything completed by tomorrow, so the day was well and truly shot.

“We have full behavioral profiles now,” Natasha went on, a note of satisfaction in her voice. “Signature patterns, encryption keys, propagation vectors. Next time something like this touches our hull, we’ll isolate it in microseconds—and trace it straight back to the source if they’re careless.”

Hermione tilted her head thoughtfully, her gaze distant as she reviewed the captured code fragments hovering in the holodisplay.

“You can learn a great deal about a culture from its programming,” she said softly. “The way it adapts, prioritizes, sacrifices. How ruthlessly it pursues goals while protecting itself.”

Natasha nodded in agreement, arms crossed as she watched the same data scroll past.

I kept my expression neutral, curious to hear their unfiltered conclusions. “And what does this code tell you about its creators?”

Hermione didn’t hesitate. “Authoritarian. Draconian. A distributed bureaucracy—efficient, competent—but ultimately subservient to a tiny elite with absolute authority. Multi-species polity, almost certainly. The architecture is a hybrid: distinct thought patterns forced into uneasy cooperation by an overriding directive. Order is imposed, not harmony. There’s a critical difference.”

Natasha picked up the thread. “Single-minded. Ruthless. The client species—or subjects—likely have little true autonomy, perhaps just the paper-thin illusion of it. Sacrifice for the whole is not just expected; it’s encoded. Individuals, entire races even, are… disposable if they serve the greater design.”

“Replaceable,” Hermione added quietly. “Everything except the ruling class itself.”
