Carrera, whose stage name is Melinda Smith, has German, Puerto Rican, Swedish and Native American origins, specifically of the Lakota people. She grew up and studied in the state of California. She entered the p0rnographic film industry in 2014 at the age of 32. In August 2020, after 19 months in prison, it was notified, after several postponements requested by the defense, that the trial against Carrera and her husband would begin in December 2020. A further postponement led to an extension of the trial wait until early February 2021, passing two years since his arrest.
