It’s the first video of 2023! Of course we’ve made tons of videos over the years celebrating Derek’s love for console Doom, but this is the first time we’ve really dug in and explored the development of a Doom port.
And ho boy, it is a doozy.
Like, alleged scammers exist in every industry right? But to find a story where the lies are so brazen and so ill-informed, and it involves a franchise as important as DOOM is truly special. I have so much respect for Rebecca Heinemen for her shrewdness and skill for actually getting anything at all out onto the 3DO. Really puts into perspective how behind every bad game, there’s someone (or multiple someones!) who went through PAIN and DRAMA just to release a bit of a turd.
But enough about that! I’ve wanted to make a video about 3DO Doom for a while now, but this video was really spearheaded by finding the company that made the Cyberdemon costume online. The story of 3DO Doom’s development has been online for a while (please check out Bad Game Hall of Fame’s 3DO Doom article if you want to see an even more detailed breakdown of everything), but I felt like this was a new piece I could add to the puzzle. So I hope you enjoy the breakdown!

2023-01-25 20:20:40 +0000 UTCThere is a source port called Phoenix Doom that runs on Windows, Linux and Mac computers. Using the original source code from Becky! The port was developed by Darragh Coy and released in 2019.

2023-01-25 20:19:35 +0000 UTCBecky has released the code on github and has said numerous times that she could’ve made a solid port if she’d had the time. So probably! But 3DO doesn’t have the retro popularity of SNES and 32x so I don’t know if there are many that even want to. But fan-improved Doom ports would be a great future episode!
