NEW VIDEO! PS2 DVD Remote | Punching Weight [SSFF]
Added 2021-04-17 23:48:04 +0000 UTC
Hello Friends,
This might be the dumbest video we’ve ever made.
I’ll try to explain. Recently I fell down a weird rabbit hole. Now, rabbit holes are kinda what we do on the regular around here but this one I fell down - the Playstation 2 Remote!
It’s a working controller on a DVD remote!
And does it work with games? YES!!
How many games?? A LOT!!
AND THERES MORE THAN ONE!
This is a topic I’ve not seen anyone else ever cover, seemed like the kinda thing for SSFF.
After this we’re getting to N-gage stuff, I swear. Next we have weirdest portable Sonic games which will include the N-Gage port. That’s been written and will be shot and ready for editing on Monday. After that, we have the rest of the month to hammer away on the N-Gage Past Mortem which will be our longest video in a while. It’ll hopefully drop very early May, so we’ll be on a one video / two week schedule.
Ask podcast recording on Monday! 4pm PT in the Discord! I’ll send out another
reminder
that morning
Thanks as always for the support!

Heh, I have two of these actually since my PS2s are my go-to CD/DVD players. I could never get the reset and disc tray buttons to work though... :(
Also CCC on PS2 is basically just the PS1 Capcom Generations games rebundled, which were release back in the pre-OG DualShock days.
Also, this would be a great 1-handed controller, since I don't think PS2 had any! I do imagine that this will be a good way to play that gravore idol mahjong game I have lying around.... uhm, I mean, the Phantasy Star Complete Collection, so I can draw maps..., ahem ^^;
Great stuff as always! The quest for the ultimate control method continues...

Wow. I am incredibly curious why that Freedom Fighters slowdown occurs. At first I thought it may be some issue where the game isn't properly reporting as a game during the intro sequence but rather loading straight-up video and getting caught in a loop with the DRM checker in the remote dongle where the console basically flips between dvd mode and game mode without actually exiting the game, but I don't think the PS2 dongle actually has any DRM going on - I'm thinking of the Xbox one, which was how Microsoft paid their DVD Consortium licensing fees. Everything in this video so far indicates that dongle is just a passive receiver.
Kinda wish I had all the items/game in question myself to test them out! My other guess would be the remote is sending a signal the game doesn't actually know what to do with and the console stutters as it decides what to do with that garbage data, but it only happening in one game makes that unlikely.. still, my next investigative steps would be to see if it happens with JUST the dongle and the remote nowhere nearby/batteries removed - and/or trying various button inputs on a real pad seeing if I can recreate the issue. But really I just want to crack open that dongle and see what's going on in there.
Sorry for the long comments, I'm in sleuth mode today I guess!
edit: Oh man, the Onimusha X thing... I'm just gonna have to order a damn PS2 remote, aren't I. Ugh, Derek!

"Digital" in this context refers to 0 and 1, or Off and On, which are the only signals sent by a d-pad. You're either pressing one (or more) of the directions, or you're not. Analog refers to the sticks sending both X position and Y position constantly as opposed to just an on/off signal like the d-pad or buttons.
Somewhat related is the limitations of infrared sensors, which also send only digital information! We have pretty advanced IR sensors/receivers nowadays that are capable of sending a ton of information in short bursts - well, a ton compared to old IR equipment anyway - but it's still limited by a very short range. Anyway, that's why the remote can only send one input at a time. When you're holding X, the remote is flashing 101101 or whatever the 'X' code is until you let go of the button, and there wouldn't be a signal for combined buttons unless the developers specifically coded in a new signal to be sent that meant "X and O" - and another for O and Square, another for Square and X, so on so forth. No reason to bother with all that work for a DVD remote though!

To make sure you see this, I forgot to mention that with the ps3 remote you can choose if it is analogue or digital, so you should check on a ps2 backwards compatible ps3 if the remote works in all games.
