Resident Evil: Tank Controls, Yay or Nay??
Added 2016-04-05 02:59:23 +0000 UTCJust a quick survey, when it comes to Resident Evil (Silent Hill, Dino Crisis etc), what are your thoughts on them Tank Controls?
And did you grow up playing the early RE games or was RE4 your first?
Comments
Grew up with them so YAY, but I could definitely see a newer fan of the series getting frustrated quickly.

2016-04-18 15:20:13 +0000 UTCI started with tank controls with RE1. It was definitely fine for what it was. I don't hate them nor love them; they just worked well for the first three Resident Evil games... the only three RE games that I actually beat.

2016-04-12 15:39:19 +0000 UTCCouldn't get into RE or RE2 because of the tank controls. Still need to try RE4 since they ditched them for that.

2016-04-11 19:22:14 +0000 UTCTried RE1 on PS1; couldn't get into it. Tried RE4 on Gamecube; now one of my favourite games. Having the camera rotate with you instead of being fixed made tank controls much less of a hassle for me. The difference in controller also helps, as I enjoyed the Gamecube version of RE2 much more with it's grooved analogue sticks.

2016-04-08 12:28:31 +0000 UTCLove the tank controls! My brother bought RE2 the day it came out and offered to let me check out the Clare disc. I refused because I was too scared.
2016-04-07 20:39:48 +0000 UTCI started with RE2 after it released and went back to the first and stayed with the franchise after that. Tank controls were fine as I had already acclimated to them with Tomb Raider. By the time RE4 hit, I didn't care for the change in mechanics. Personally I felt Code Veronica was the apex of the franchise and thought it was a proper evolution versus trying to reinvent itself as another genre as it did with RE4.

2016-04-06 03:28:16 +0000 UTCRE5 was first for me but I have played many others. I also played the remake on xbox and I was begging Jill to be able to aim straight. I cant fathom why anyone would want this in our modern day. I mean, yes, its classic and charming but it is also VERY impractical. In Resident Evil 5: Lost in Nightmares it was optional, just like playing co-op. More options = more game for everyone. So I really hope they can have both the option of online co op and tank controls in the RE2 remake.

2016-04-05 23:15:36 +0000 UTCYay ... Best survival have that control escheme.
2016-04-05 21:50:24 +0000 UTCSame with most others here, tank controls dont bother me at all. It really does help build the tension, given the limited mobility. The first game I remember playing that used tank controls was Silent Hill, but, only about 10 years ago or so. Very very late to the game :P

2016-04-05 13:41:41 +0000 UTCI do like the tank controls as for me it improves the tension in both combat and puzzles. Resident Evil remake is my favourite game from the series. Like resi 4 as well but it wasn't scary because of the lack of tank controls, easily able to avoid enemy attacks and solve puzzles quickly.

2016-04-05 12:53:05 +0000 UTCI've never had problems with them and actually like them. Once you get the hang of it, it's very fluid and you can turn very quickly.

2016-04-05 11:45:52 +0000 UTCOnimusha is great. Enjoy that stuff man. Make sure to check out Dawn of Dreams. It's a different kind of beast, and it's a huge experience. Bit more open, but not open world. You'll see.

2016-04-05 08:30:32 +0000 UTCI had a N64, so only RE game I played till the PS2 was RE2. Good stuffs though. Tank control acceptance depends on the game. If the camera is static and the perspective jumps around every ten feet you walk, then you need tank controls. That way when you push up you're always moving forward no matter the angle. But everyone knows that, so that all was pointless. Games will never be like the old Silent Hills because they were a product of the time. The technical limitations actually enhanced the atmosphere and style of the games. Nothing, not even if Silent Hills had been made, would feel like the old SH games. It just can't be done today, and we probably shouldn't try. And a side note, RE4 has tank controls too, just like REs 1, 2, and 3. Seriously, it plays exactly like any prior RE game. Only difference is that the camera is behind the shoulders. Push up to move forward, left and right to pivot, press down and tap run to quick turn, stationary while aiming, I mean the controls are virtually the same.

2016-04-05 08:25:11 +0000 UTCNever liked them, and I have been playing since RE1.

2016-04-05 06:50:51 +0000 UTCGrew up on RE 2. I find direct controls frustrating as the camera changes.

2016-04-05 06:41:54 +0000 UTCThey've never actually bothered me, I feel like Silent Hill did them the best
2016-04-05 04:27:24 +0000 UTCOh crap tank controls.. forgot.. I can.. tolerate them... sorta

2016-04-05 04:18:38 +0000 UTCI grew up on the PS1.. so RE1 was m first... Well teh first I watched...

2016-04-05 04:18:20 +0000 UTCI don't hate them, but I'm not sure it can work without a tremendous amount of enforcing atmosphere. It just makes more sense to have an adjustable camera.

2016-04-05 04:13:20 +0000 UTCMy first was RE: Directors Cut back on 98. It took some getting used to but so did many games back then. The games were designed with that control scheme in mind and were competently made so I think they are fine. I also think that the updated form of it in RE4 is great. As long as the game is well made they're fine. It's a Yay from me, though that doesn't mean I'm asking for them to revive it.

2016-04-05 03:27:47 +0000 UTCI think tank controls worked well when digital controls are the only option, such as d-pad or arrow keys. Due to the 360 degree environment, Resident Evil (and other games) required something more granular than the 8 directional movement otherwise seen. However, when analog controls are available, I much prefer just pointing in the direction I want to move. I was born in the early 80s, so I was able to experience Resident Evil starting from the first, although I do think 4 is my favorite from a gameplay standpoint.

2016-04-05 03:22:39 +0000 UTCI'm playing Onimusha for the first time, and yeah tank controls are really really hard to get used to, for me at least. My first Resident Evil was indeed 4, total scrub over here I know.

2016-04-05 03:09:50 +0000 UTCResident Evil 2 was my first back when it was released. As for the tank controls, I just recently replayed Grim Fandango with tank controls. It kind of sucked at first, or so I thought, but I in the end it actually worked better with the pre-rendered backgrounds; up always meaning forward, for example, works well with the quickly shifting backgrounds. Tank controls used to keep me from revisiting the classics that used them, but I'm not convinced they work well for what they were originally designed for. My two cents. 👍
