[SSFF] Past Mortem: The Story Behind Kojima vs Konami Explained

Hello again supporters!

We're back again with another new show for 2016! This one will stay exclusive to you wonderful supporters until Tuesday morning, so enjoy!

Past Mortem is a show that gives a post mortem on past events. Again, we're trying to mix things up in 2016, this is our all history, no review show. In this episode we break down the knitty gritty of one of 2015's biggest controversies: the breakup of Kojima and Konami.

Also shouts to Grace, she did the majority of the research and writing for this one! And shouts to Clockwork Pixel for crafting another fantastic bumper.

Enjoy!

[SSFF] Past Mortem: The Story Behind Kojima vs Konami Explained

Comments

I don't know why this video doesn't have a Million views. I'll do my best to share it around.

DownrightSuperb

Great video! Between this and George Weidman's/Super Bunnyhop's video on the matter, I got a lot of info that helps shed light on why Konami had this Salted Earth policy.

Busterdrag

This is what I like about this video intelligent scripting.

Tim J Green

This video was great Derek keep it going 10/10.

Yeah, it was like 3am and could't be bothered looking up the spelling lol. I didn't entirely throw the guy under the bus, but I may have stood around and took pics.

Loved this. Props for all the research on this too. I'm sure that wasn't easy tracking down all the facts all over the web. Fascinating how companies in Japan make these weird business decisions. But hey - with Inafune, Kojima, and Igarashi all making their own things now, it might all work out well for us gamers in the end! ::crosses fingers::

Super Cool Idea, really well executed.

Fantastic, excellent, (recent,) history lesson! It's a breath of fresh air to hear about this topic from someone other then Mr. Sterling! Perhaps it's a tad early, but I would love to see you chat about the "Death" of the PS Vita, with S.C.E. not developing any games for it anymore. Hopefully in the future we can talk about thatgamecompany and Team ICO and their stuff. (The show is a bit more specific then these specific topics, I know, but my mind is just running wild!!!)

Matthieu Loose

thanks! but as for new topics, it's up to grace. this is really her show! she's super good at researching stuff. we have a big list of possible topics, i'll add yours to the list!

i did *not* get p.t. before it went away (some friends hooked up with game footage), but i was able to get the download icon so i was able to capture live footage of "no longer available". it's "geoff keighley" (he's canadian btw), and i think he gets a bum rap for that photo. i mean, that's what he does, he's not a critic or a reporter. i guess still technically a journalist, he's mainly a personality and television producer. the dorritos thing sparked a conversation worth having but throwing keighley under the bus was not the solution.

Grace wrote the script for this, that's why there are more jokes. And we sometimes had different opinions about how a joke should be delivered. We might cut some of the jokes out when we make this live for youtube.

Great job Derek! Your investigation was way more detailed than any article I've read about the topic. How about next going after PlayStation add-on to the SNES? Why Nintendo pulled the plug on the projecto and what was behind Sony's decision to chance the acessory into a full console? Do you think it is a viable topic for your new show?

Man, there's nothing I can say about Konami that hasn't already been said. It's really damn sad and heart breaking that their new management would pull this kind of shit and say fuck the fans. So, fuck you Konami. Sorry for all the swearing, but damn if this hasn't pissed me off and sent me on multiple rants. Luckily, I caught the P.T. news and redownloaded it before it was gone. Very glad I did. At least it's something amazing to play. A glimmer of what could have been. And lastly, I'm not a big Jeff Keighly (hope I spelled it right), but the way he gave the proverbial finger to Konami and stood up for Kojima at the awards was really ballsy. I've gained some respect for the guy. Seen people make fun of him for years, I mean who can forget the Dorrito Pope? But that act alone has really changed my opinion of him. Good show D-man.

Not going to give this one its own bumper as well? I stand all kinds of corrected... Thats what I get for typing things before the actual video begins. But I have to say... As a pure history show. I find myself interested. Not sure what else I want to learn about so I will lean back and see what others want. 9/10

Honestly, really good journalism work. I was following the whole Konami MGS since then and even you managed to point out a few things I didn't know. So really good legwork in that regard. Some constructive criticism: There were a few spots I noticed that were kinda jarring during the voice over. Not in terms of production, but more in tone. I was pretty focused on kinda hearing the story, then Derek would say something lighthearted and it would be "Aw! Derek comin' in with the goofs!" then it got factual and serious again. Obviously, not saying that Derek should be monotone and not put any of that charm in, but I think it would be better received if you kinda lead into it. Not saying I could do much better mind you, it's a trial to go from doing a lot of opinion/review/entertainment to delivering a more fact-focused documentary. But it was just something I noticed. Otherwise, very awesome!
