ROUGH CUT Castlevania SotN Re:Certified Classic

Hello Patreon Supporters! I'm still pluggin' away on the next video which will be the first in a new series called "Re:Certified Classic". Here's a rough cut, it still needs a lot graphics and an ending but it's about 80% edited and the audio is locked. Let me know what you think! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SdBw2CoPpo

thanks! i've been kicking it around for a few months, it's good to have an episode out the door.

i like to challenge people with my videos (at least that's the intent, haha) and the idea of "nostalgia" is something i want to eliminate from retro game analysis and old-school nerd culture in general. there's nothing wrong with being nostalgic for things but "i loved this game as a kid!" does not belong in a review unless it's followed up with "but when i played it recently my mind had changed" (even then, a review should be about the game, not the reviewer). and it's not about the false idea that negativity=insight or coldly abandoning your childhood memories as you grow older, i think there's merit in setting those feelings aside and reevaluating things. i think i still have a lot of work to do with this series but it will help me explore that idea.

thanks, glad you enjoyed it! i'm trying to put more skits into video but they're secondary for me. i wont force it, if i can't think of anything funny for a video i just focus on the review but i know successful skits elevate videos. the shatterhand video was something really great, i'm definitely proud of that one but that was just an idea i felt was really solid (and the animation was a pleasant surprise!). when i watch other people's videos, skits that aren't funny and/or over-stay their welcome are just the worst. i'd rather play it straight than force jokes to fill some imaginary quota. plus i don't think that's really my strength anyway but maybe i just need more practice. we definitely *need* decoration. i hate the blank background. the wish list thing is a good idea but the idea behind the patreon was to use that money to support the show, might be kinda weird.

I think I'm going to enjoy this new series.

That was very good! I think this will be a great "series" of videos. All too often reviewers use nostalgia to cloud their review, and don't provide adequate detail to new players. You did an excellent job providing the hard facts! Looking forward to more! :)

that video felt so right and this looked completed to me! I just about lost it when I saw a clip of chopper attack. Not a great game by any means but a decent rocking soundtrack. Aero gauge too.

I really enjoyed it. What I like most about your reviews and retrospectives is that it isn't just a canned breakdown of the components of a game but why and where it does (or doesn't) hold up in the medium as a whole. Your appreciation for a title comes through as authentic and your articulate why very well. That being said, I know you want to differentiate from your older material and while I think the your writing and editing are down to almost a science, I do appreciate the skit-like stuff of old. You did so with Shatterhand and that made the review so much better in addition to making it stand apart from other reviewers. Each video gets better and better-set decorations would be nice though and if you're looking for anything specific, a public wish list might yield some fruit from your supporters. ;) All in all, I like the evolution of your material and look forward to seeing what's next.
