My recent artwork + thoughts on art style/branding

I spent the last 2 weeks just drawing whatever I wanted and it's been really fun to make everything from traditional paintings to cute round animals. But looking at the artwork I've been making recently, I feel so scattered when it comes to style/branding.

Usually I draw cute animals, but now I'm making plants. I often make more rendered digital pieces, but now I'm also making simple doodles for The Popcorn Parade. And we can also throw traditional painting into the mix.

Looking at this artwork I've just recently made, it looks like it could be from different artists. And I got that comment a lot at the Christmas Market from people thinking my booth was artwork from other artists and I was just re-selling work. That hurt.

I have always loved drawing in different styles and trying new things, the only consistency being my love for drawing animals. But what does that mean for an artist who wants to have a company/brand?

Style vs Branding

A recent conversation on our Discord sparked the ever long discussion of "What is style?"

I have always considered art style the natural way you like to draw - this could be defined by the types of things you like to make or the type of medium you usually use. And today, I still use this to define art style.

Branding I think is what people are confusing for art style. Branding is what we think of when a company or artist comes to mind. On the outside, it will be things like the colors, fonts, subject matter/product and logos they use. Underneath, it includes the voice, personality and values of the company (or artist).

Staying in your "style" as an artist

I think many artists strive to stick to a certain kind of branding to make their visual/aesthetic style more appealing for the socials. And it makes sense - we like to see a cohesive, well curated feed. It looks pretty and will draw in an audience that resonates with it which means more follows/likes/shares/etc.

But as artists, I think that's really hard to do. Don't get me wrong, there are some amazing artists who have a very clear style and brand - for example Loish or Heikala. But I think that once artists start becoming more a brand, there's a limitation in what they can share on social media.

Loish is known for her amazing digital paintings of women - long brush strokes and a very painterly style. But, wouldn't you be surprised if she suddenly started posting vector art that looked like Pusheen?

Heikala is known for her ghibli-like traditional paintings, usually featuring girls in serene landscapes. But, wouldn't it be weird if she suddenly made hyper realistic digital paintings of super muscley men?

Now I'm not saying that this is what they are doing in their free time, but we don't know what kinds of artwork these artists aren't sharing on social media. It could be that they make lots of other kinds of artwork, but for the sake of the socials and their brand, they aren't sharing it.

A difficult path

I think there is a time in every art business when the artist wants to grow and will need to make this decision - to stop showing everything they make on socials and only the work that fits their brand.

I have tried for many years to do this by making separate accounts or simply holding back from sharing my other "off brand" artwork, but still haven't been able to achieve this. It's been very difficult for me as an artist with a company to be true to myself when you throw in social media (and making money) into the mix.

But I feel like I'm reaching the point where I will have to make a decision for the direction I want to go with my art business because my work is no longer just art - it's also a business.

Morning thoughts from Birdie, before breakfast and coffee - an unplanned Patreon post <3

I hope you enjoyed this random and unplanned post! It was just something I was thinking about this morning. Also I know this is a lot to read through, so I may make this into a Youtube video too.

Have you ever felt this way? Do you disagree? Let me know so I can talk about it in the follow up video cause I'm curious to see how other artists feel!

Patreon is definitely my creative outlet! I'd love to maintain the Popcorn Parade more, but it's like you said - it's a lot to manage. I've also been trying to figure out if I should do something with all my bird art but I couldn't possibly make another separate line... Right? πŸ˜…

Birdie

Glad to know I'm not the only one feeling this! πŸ’• I love plants a lot and want to paint a few more large paintings like this for the studio. Congrats on being a new plant mom 😁

I loved all of this. I feel the same way!! I’ll take your morning thoughts any time! I don’t have an answer, but I feel the struggle. Also - I love anything you do! I love the plants!! I haven’t had house plants in a very long time, and just adopted three! Now I’ve been in a very plant-y mood haha!

I personally love having a glimpse into artist's other creative styles, even hobbies and life in general, because that way their art somehow feels more natural and also valuable - when you know the person behind it more and want to probably support them because it feels like you're almost friends haha. But I also understand the way the branding vs style feeling, and I agree with the other comments that eg Patreon is a great space to share everything, not just brand-acceptable pieces, because there are already people who want to support you whatever you do and the community is great and we also like to be inspired and motivated by the new things you do and try and to be able to talk about the trials and errors like the humans we are! The socials are all in all your sales channel and as such it needs to be operated, like all the other ones - so maintaining a cohesive feed makes you interesting for buyers, and that's great and absolutely the right thing to do. It's probably about finding the right "creative outlet" that works for you, and if it happens to be Patreon, that's our win! (Also differentiating the brands like Birdie Tam vs Popcorn Parade feels right but I get that it must be exhausting to maintain several social profiles - been there done that.)

I love the work and the fact that you’re just going with what you want to draw / paint etc.. you’re so creative and this will just enhance that. Draw what you’d like, you’ll always have a following ❀️

Thanks Lora, it means a lot. I think the tricky part is that I've been thinking of working with shops more to sell my work or do wholesale, and that's when my "brand" becomes a problem. Since it's so wide, it's hard to tell a shop what kind of "aesthetic" I have and whether or not we're compatible with each other. It's been a lot to think about, whether or not to be a brand with a clear focus or an authentic artist free to create

Birdie

It's interesting people thought you were reselling, and I can definitely see how that would be hurtful. Maybe it's because I see all your work on social media and Patreon, so I immediately recognize it and your style. And I do feel like they are cohesive in their own way. I don't have any advice since I love all your work and various styles - but there is so much art to love, it's not like I only enjoy one style. I wish artists and companies were free to share more freely and to show other work they do etc. I like that yours feels more authentic and broad while still being 'you' and full of cute animals.

Lora

Thanks for the words of encouragement Kathy!! I find Patreon to be my fave platform cause it allows me to make all kinds of artwork. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet but I'm working on finding a way to make a good balance

Birdie

Branding as a creative is tricky for sure! I think somewhere like Patreon is perhaps a good space to be too concerned about sticking to your classic brand, we're here for you and if this is what is sparking your creative interest right now then that's great. Social is tricky for sure. You shouldn't stifle yourself or burnt yourself out trying to stay "on brand". We all change as we grow so it makes since your art will also change. Or maybe it is time for a rebranding that allows for more flexibility? Hope you find a good balance for you =)
