To create a Gem it took life from earth to create it, thats why its to barren there, and why Amythest was upset because thats her home and she essentially took life from earth! Also the Red eye Peridot was talking about was the one she sent in Episode 2 "Laser Light Cannon" where there uses Roses Cannon in Gregs Storage Unit.
