in terms of lore, it's VERY important. just from the small details you can get what is going on and how does the universe of gumball works. it's not like they are just breaking the forth wall, they literally make the meta-lore, the breaking of the 4th wall is an important part of the lore. now we know that rob is not just a villain who hates gumball just because he exists, he hates him because gumball is THE MAIN CHARACTER. rob knows they live in the show and the universe works how gumball wants: gumball cares about someone and the show makes this somebody very significant (penny, for example), and if gumball doesn't remember somebody, universe just send this somebody to the void. rob is tired of this - he is tired of the fact that everyone exists just because gumball gave them a role, and if somebody doesn't want to follow the role, it's over. rob doesn't want to be the villain - he wants just to live, for that particular moment he wants to live even in the show, it doesn't matter. "once you're out of the picture, i can be whoever i want!" - he thinks that erasing gumball from their reality could guarantee that every other character would choose their role themselves and not to depend on gumball. this is super cool motivation for the villain and rob slaying it, really.
and i mentioned the details about the working of their universe, so it should be explained as well. if you payed attention, you saw that after rob closed the door to the void, there were credits. so it's safe to say that the void is the space "between the shows", literally the static place out of every television program. so if "the amazing world of gumball" doesn't need a character anymore thanks to gumball and audience's approval, the show takes the characters off like a garbage in this place, so they are "in between". the remote is the ACTUAL remote of the REAL TV, that's why rob can control everything - because it's like he controls the show on the screen, like an audience. it's only my theory, but i think that the van and the person in it are the real ones - from the reality. that's why there are so many "strange things" - this person literally sell the things from the real world, that's why he has a real remote (and in the future eps we will see another items that point on this theory very much".
