The regular trip down the river

At the start of this year there was quite a bit of interest in several older Disney animations entering the public domain, meaning they lost protection from copyright laws. The most popular of these now public animations is the "Steamboat Willie" animation, where an older style of Mickey mouse rides down a river in a steamboat.

Due to Disney's reluctance to lose their iconic main character (understandably), there are still some legal issues regarding using this piece of work, but many people were eager to create and post their own work based on this animation- me being one of them 😎

My goal is to make a horror game based on the "Steamboat Willie" animation. I'm definitely not the first to attempt this, but I felt inspired and here we are. The video I posted above is a time-lapse of me creating one of the monsters that will be encountered on the abhorrent ride down the river. I have yet to fully implement this beast, hence why the guy is just running in place in the last clip of the video. My idea for what he does when encountered is the classic horror game trope where the thing will run at you while you are turned away from it, but then freezes in place while facing it. Similar to the the concept of SCP-173, the weeping angels of Doctor Who, or the recently popular Coil-head from Lethal Company.

How do I feel about it? I really like the way the creature looks, despite it being fairly generic. I will be trying to come up with more unique mechanics other than "don't look away or you die", but might not deviate from it too much for my own sanity's sake. I DON'T like the animation. I have always struggled with animation but I have come to terms with how ugly this guy's crawling is. We'll leave the animation be for now because I'm tired of working on it. There will be other monsters, probably 4 at least.

I've decided this will be the topic for the next video, and I also promised myself that I would finish the game before making the video about it. Give me a couple more months and it should be good enough to call finished. Should be.

You guys are awesome. I know this is a lot to read but if you enjoyed the insight let me know and I will keep it up!

Now that's an interesting idea, having to stay in the light to keep from getting caught 🤔 I will definitely be considering adding this as a mechanic, since it might make the monster much more entertaining to encounter. Not sure how I didn't think of this myself honestly lol. If I do add this, would you mind if I mentioned you for coming up with the idea in the video I make about it? Also thanks for the compliment!!

I could see this creature being something that lurks in the dark, so you need to stay in the light to avoid getting yoinked by it. I really like this design!
