Here's a sprite sheet and concept layout for a possible scene in the Bug Game RPG.
Some of the artwork I absolutely love, such as the green knotted trunks of the thick trees, and the spearhead leaves of the willow like hanging branch vines. I wanted to give the impression that the land the characters were stranded in was more of a thick temperate forest rather than a tropical jungle.
You might be eying the crashed plane sprite and thinking it seems awfully similar to the crashed plane scene in the third version of my purple corn game. The concept certainly bled over. I'm not sure why I am so obsessed with having a wrecked plane scene in my games, but I think it came from seeing the plane crash set for War of the Worlds at Universal Studios, Hollywood. Something about that part of the tour stuck with me.
I also like how simple the color palette is. Utilizing a limited color palette is something I have always been a fan of in my own art and game styles. As an artist, I feel like having a predetermined and simple/limited color palette allows you to focus more on the design and less on picking the perfect colors. That being said, my design here is far from outstanding, I only really like the way the trees and some of the foliage looks for this game. The rest of it could definitely benefit from a do-over in my opinion.
For those of you who are curious- I usually find my color palette for pixel art at lospec.com/palette-list, although I am not sure if that's where I got the palette for this game or if I instead just made it myself. I think it was probably the latter.
These are first drafts of course but as I mentioned in the previous Bug Game video post, the game unfortunately didn't make it much further than this.
