I appreciated the message but had no idea what she was referring to so I looked into it and learned about the whole Kanye thing. Then of course I was primed and engaged in the subdequent news and fallout. I was still not very online but even I was following it, it was a hard time to be a swiftie! By platforming it at the grammys, she took a Twitter stan war into the public and legitimate the conversation about it, and I strongly believe her publicist should have coached her not to do that. Her current method of (for the most part) letting the online "discourse" just be online has really benefitted her image.

She didn't love the lyrics but said yeah, if that's your story. As a songwriter she knows you can exaggerate. However when he said ' I made her famous ' not only is he taking credit for her work he's reminding her of that traumatizing moment when he took her award. Also calling her a bitch, when she had been nothing but forgiving and graceful. She felt manipulated and used, when you feel that way, emotions take over. Kanye lies. I think Taylor was viewed as overreacting and playing the victim, but every person's reaction to abuse, manipulation is different. I was raised by a narc so I was used to being treated like shit, Taylor on the other hand has good loving parents. If you see the journey to fearless you start to understand how fragile she was and that's why "who's afraid of little old me?" is the best fuck you she could day "I was tame, I was gentle till the circus life made me mean", let's not forget there are clowns to west.

Memory is faulty and she was clearly anxious and walking on eggshells on this call (and in this dynamic). I think she was holding back a lot of what she actually felt and thought on that call. Of course she’s not going to perfectly recall what she said months later. What we intend to say with our words isn’t always what comes out, but still flavors our memory of what happened. I wouldn’t be surprised if she honestly believed she pushed back on him more from the feminist angle - that’s how she identified at the time and that’s who she wanted to be. How we self identify can have a huge influence on memory. I think she was in an impossible situation defending this months later based on her memory of what happened.

Like, it’s such a “technicalities” kind of situation that it’s not quite right to say that either of them were outright lying (or intentionally obscuring the truth). I was 16 at the time and in my peak hand-heart swiftie era and even I could see that this was a muddied and more nuanced situation than what was being presented by both sides. And to be honest the phone call itself was the tipping point. We were in peak Buzzfeed-feminism-Taylor-is-secretly-a-Nazi-Barbie era and this was the perfect ingredient to finally topple her over. I remember people were making awful comparisons between Snakegate and how white women historically cry crocodile tears and get black men in trouble. I do have to admit Taylor was playing into that a little bit (unconsciously, no doubt). I was cringing at her smarminess at that Grammys speech even at that time. I was like girl now you’re just doing too much….I also have to wonder how much she had actually forgiven Kanye for the 2009 VMA moment and that this wasn’t just an old wound being re-opened and doused with the bitter lemon of being called “that bitch” coupled with all the other nonsense she was having to deal with from the rest of the media. The true villain here I feel is Kim who edited the video and stuck her nose into a situation where she could’ve easily mediated between her husband (who she knew was vulnerable and a mentally ill person) and a young popstar in her 20s who had a very traumatic and humiliating experience with him in the past and was prone to feeling like she was being attacked again. She definitely put gasoline all over that situation and she had so much cultural power back then, she knew EXACTLY what she was doing. (And please can we refrain from the “not you blaming a woman for a man’s actions” which I know will inevitably be brought up here. Like, yes Kanye was at fault too but he wasn’t the one mouthing off about it on social media and Snapchat. I do think a reconciliation between him and Taylor would’ve been possible even at this point if Kim hadn’t leaked the footage).

Tay was also under the impression (it literally came from Kanye’s mouth) that he would play her the song but he didnt., so she was blindsided when the song came out. This was so wrong in so many levels. But Tree saying that Taylor was not aware of the actual line “i made that bitch famous” was hella misleading. She didnt know about the bitch word only, but the part of making her famous, she did know and supported: “even if i sold 7 million copies of that album u didnt know who i was. That was ur perspective” or something along those lines. And her Grammy speech was addressing the fact that Kanye took credit for her fame, not about the bitch line. She also obfuscated the truth here and exaggerated about how she warned Kanye about the misogynistic message of the song. She simply said the feminists wont think its cool.
