House of the Dragon 2x8 Uncut Reaction!

Comments

I absolutely loved this season. The writing and dialogue were outstanding, the acting was incredible, cinematography was amazing; the show felt like it was firing on all cylinders to me. I was surprised to see complaints about the pacing or what the finale was, but frankly I suspect those are the same type of people who have railed against every Star Wars thing Disney has made, if you know what I'm sayin'. I agree wholeheartedly with what Hector said about this season feeling like it had momentum. The show was taking its' time while also dropping a bomb in every single episode. I'm so pleased the show was confident enough to be patient with the storytelling and not simply rush to action sequences because those long pensive shots of characters looking out of windows hit me just as hard as dragons flying through the sky. Can't wait for season 3! Also, keep an eye on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, it's a GoT show based on a comic book.

There is not too long of a wait, because they are starting a spinoff which is closer to the time of Game Of Thrones, A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms. I hope you react to that new show as well in the meantime.

The only criticism of the GOT faithful is on how slow season 2 was, especially since the last 2 seasons of GOT were so fast and crammed so much in so few episodes. This episode seemed to me to be episode Zero of season 3, setting all of the players in there places for the war. BTW, the fleet of pirates were from Easteros, the OTHER continent in this world. (Everything has been happening on Westeros.) Whole nother set of families and people to keep the reader confused.

Also for Helaena, I think they did a really good job subtly revealing and confirming her power of prophecy over the two seasons. A few times each season they had her say a cryptic thing that the characters (and the first time viewer at home) would ignore as just “the quiet girl saying weird things again.” But on a rewatch they stand out like a sore thumb. In her very first scene in S1E6 she says under her breath that Aemond “will have to close an eye” to claim a dragon. And in her first scene this season she tells Aegon that she’s scared of the “rats”, not the dragons (while looking at her kids’ beds). And there are a handful of others. Absolutely loved that reveal of how powerful she really is.

LOVED that whole conversation at the beginning about adaptations and different mediums and letting a show tell the story it is telling!
