First Time Watching AKIRA!

What's up, homies! The boys are taking Adam to Neo-Tokyo this week for his very first ever watchalong of the classic Akira! This one is guaranteed to make his brain melt. Have you read the original manga? Let us know how you think it stacks up to this anime adaptation.

Next week, we're jumping back into the world of Miyazaki with Kiki's Delivery Service.

First Time Watching AKIRA!

Hadn't seen this before! What a treat! And holy moly did it inspire a ton of popular culture.

Couldn’t agree more

Hector, I can't wait to hear what you think of the manga! I re-read it every few years. The manga took Otomo approximately 10 years to complete and this film was released when vol. 3 of 6 was out (I believe - my facts could be off) the movie sort of covers what happens.. in the manga, we follow the gang post-akira white ball of energy into a post-apocalyptic neo-Tokyo. Easily one of the most impressive technical achievements in comic history. Hope you talk about it in the future! You three are great! Keep up the anime movie coverage! I recommend Perfect Blue or Paprika if you're interested in more psychological horror!

Was amazing to finally watch this movie!! It’s freaking amazing wow! I first heard about it because Adventure Time makes reference to it at a significant plot moment. 😂

loving the content pivot. Hopefully after the strike you guys can still squeeze in some anime stuff.

Resubbed to experience this again with ya'll. Keep the anime comin! Cowboy bebop would be an amzing rewatch with ya'll.

So if I'm getting this right, an amoeba with the strength of a human would still act like an amoeba, and a man with godlike abilities would not turn into a god, he'd just have more power to act on his human flaws? Isn't that relevant! I watched this movie as a kid and didn't understand nor like it, I feel like now, while still not my genre, I can definitely appreciate where it comes from. Had to watch along in Japanese since I don't own the English dub, will have to check the youtube cut to listen to some of it. Thank you guys for another interesting one, can't wait to see what you'll be up to next week.

Just done watching the whole movie together with you guys, having watched for the first time in years, but for a third time it again has some things I didn't pick up on the first two times. It is a masterpiece, that's for sure.

https://youtu.be/xf0WjeE6eyM and https://youtu.be/IqVoEpRIaKg, two videos about how this movie was made, the impact that it has had on movies and animation in general.

If anyone is looking to watch the full uncut version, Funimation app has it and I believe they offer a free 7 days trial

Hell yeah! This movie is many things, but one contribution it’s made to the world is the iconic bike slide shot, it’s been repeated/copied in so many other movies and shows over the years. I definitely recommend the manga too if you like this because it’s a fully fleshed out story. They made this movie before the manga was fully finished, which is why there’s different endings

Bradley

I ordered the DVD so the earliest I can watch is Monday I think. Really looking forward to this one.

WinterRaven

Oh this is gonna be a fun one. I haven't watched this film in like 20 years and this will be a good rewatch with the homies.

Okay, now we're talking. Really interested to see you how you guys feel about this one. OG anime head, here. Akira was my first, I guess, serious adult anime and I was way too young when I first watched it. That said, it's a classic for a reason and if you like the movie, definitely check out the manga. There's a lot more stuff and it's incredible.
