Our FIRST TIME Watching MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO!

Homies! Thanks so much for sticking around as we temporarily pivot away from struck work and embrace something new. We're super excited to share our uncut reaction to Studio Ghibli's My Neighbor Totoro. It's all of our first times watching this beautiful film!

We're excited to dive into more anime and manga classics! Coming soon, Akira!

Our FIRST TIME Watching MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO!

Comments

The urban legend said Mei and Saski were already dead, and Totoro was a reaper god.

Time for welcome to the space show*

The Studi Ghibli films I know are Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle we borrowed from the library many times when I was little and I really like them, I saw Nausicaa, Kiki's Princess Mononoke and Ponyo sometime in my teens, Ponyo was the only one I didn't vibe with, I saw this movie for the first time almost exactly 1 year ago

If you guys like studio ghibli, check out their exhibit at LACMA. An entire floor dedicated to the studio. It’s amazing!

Just got done watching the YouTube edit of the Totoro watch. (I was too lazy to set up a sync stream for this one, and I've seen it a number of times.) I love the tension you guys felt about what is generally considered a slow-paced and wholesome/gentle film. Your reaction really made it fresh. Fortunately, you have an excuse not to watch Grave of the Fireflies (which, by the way, was originally a double feature with Totoro; the original Barbenheimer). It is not available streaming anywhere due to distribution rights issues. Other Ghibli movies I'd love to see you react to: The Tale of Princess Kaguya; Laputa: Castle in the Sky; When Marnie Was There; Howl's Moving Castle. I know Hector referenced Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, which are definitely at the top of my list, but some of the others may have escaped previous notice. I look forward to you watching more Ghibli movies, but if you want something more suspenseful, check out some of Satoshi Kon's and Makoto Shinkai's work. They are still beautifully animated, but a bit more intense than the typical Ghibli movie. Thanks for sharing this watch-along with us. I'm off to find your review on Chexicans! I look forward to more anime with Heroes Reforged!

Michael Charboneau

Just a suggestion for a future reaction. While technically not a Ghibili film 'Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind' is one of my favorites was written & directed by Miyazaki and based on his manga.

RalyDee

Absolutely loved watching this movie through again with you guys! Anime always has a great mix of drama and imagination, even in something like this that’s meant as a kid’s movie. It’s so different from western kid’s movies so watching it, especially when unfamiliar with anime, is such a unique, calming, and exciting experience! I hope we can get more anime and animation reactions even after the strikes conclude. 😄

Heyo homies! I'm really happy you've started the anime film journey. There are a lot of titles to look forward to (especially in the studio Ghibili collection.) I am also So excited for your Akria review. Akira was my first full length anime, it was recorded from the scify channel onto a VHS by my friend. He insisted we watch it during my birthday sleepover and it melted my brain. I had no idea such adult themes were in animated feature films. Keep in mind while watching: Akira released in Japan the same year the Little Mermaid premiered in America.

This was a great choice for a first anime reaction and such a fun time! Saw a few comments suggesting Satoshi Kon films and I hope you'll get around to at least one. He is a legend. I would say Perfect Blue or Tokyo Godfathers but just a heads up, Perfect Blue will need a trigger warning for some graphic scenes. Also you guys would get a kick out of an interview he did where he threw shade at Darren Aronofsky for copying scenes from Perfect Blue (in Requiem for a Dream and Black Swan). Some people also debate if Nolan's Inception took inspiration from Kon's Paprika as well. Im curious to look into it further myself.

My Neighbor Totoro is a very important movie for us, Japanese people. Totoro has been broadcast on TV many times and is loved by generations, and I feel that it depicts the nostalgia and the Japanese soul that many modern Japanese have forgotten. When you think of Hayao Miyazaki's movies, you think of Joe Hisaishi's music. His music always makes me tear up.

Akihiro

My first experience with Studio Ghibli was "Spirited Away" a few years back when I was supervising a student led film club at the school I teach at. I enjoyed it, but was left kind of bewildered at whatever I had just seen. Watching this, with you guys, for the first time made me appreciate what I was seeing throughout. Can't wait for more Ghibli reactions from you all.

Chris Williamson

Totoro is an amazing choice. And there are SO many other great animes you guys could react to even if the strike ends. I hope this will continue past that. And great Ace Ventura reference, Adam! "IT'S IN THE BOOOONE!"

Jay McFly

I love Akira as well, if only they waited to make the movie until after the manga was finished. That whole story is *chefs kiss*. But it’s still an enjoyable watch for me since the visuals are just breathtaking

Bradley

Love that you guys watched Totoro. That movie is so dear to my heart! And that song at the end... I won't get it out of my head for ages now again :) Are you guys maybe looking for some recommendations that are most recent? How about "Your Name" or "Suzume"? But not sure if Suzume is dubbed yet.

Starkilla

I'm right there with Agustin - there is no money on earth that could get me to sit down for Grave of Fireflies for round 2. I couldn't finish round 1 it was just too sad. I did enjoy watching the creeping dread you guys had to go through while watching this movie, which I remember first seeing back in the early to mid 90s as a young teen. The cynicism that modern media has set into us was very apparent. I know a lot of people recommend Perfect Blue, but that's another one that I'm going to pass on if you do watch it. Akira is a classic, but I never really cared for the story. The aesthetic of it is amazing, tho. I recommend the OG Vampire Hunter D, Armitage III, Spirited Away (another Ghibli), GunSmith Cats, Shinesman (which is a parody of Power Ranger type tropes), Wrath of the Ninja, and finally the series Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040. All are older but highly entertaining.

I saw this film on my own for the 1st time, right before I saw your reaction. Magic. That's what this picture is and the score is to die for! Yall should react to Cowboy Bebop the anime and it's film!!

Ronin Unchained

I loved this reaction!!

Rebecca Solomon

I would be remiss not to mention the anime movie Redline as a future watch along. It’s from 2009, entirely hand drawn, 2D animation. It’s got a wild story because it took 7 years to produce, and it bankrupted its studio. But it’s truly an incredible movie that you 3 would eat right up

Bradley

This is probably my favorite reaction video ever! I introduced my kid to this movie when he was very young (I think 4ish.) He now 9 and loves watching these movies. Hearing all of your thoughts about the storytelling and the animation details was also great. In particular, your dread that something awful was going to happen the entire movie was hilarious! Can't wait to see you guys react to more of these!

Nosde Tra

Watching Ghibli movies in summer is so perfect, they just have that vibe of a child enjoying nature during their summer break. I'm adding to your growing list Only Yesterday, one of the minor movies from Isao Takahata that needs so much more love. (But yeah, if you ever watch Grave of the Fireflies you're on your own. Masterpiece of a movie, I'm not watching it ever again.)

Elisa DL

This is one of my all time faves, I've rewatched it last May (after all Satsuki means May and Mei is an onomatopoeia from English) but hell yeah, I was thrilled to go through it again with you guys. Totoro, as the girls explain, is a dream but it actually isn't, it's Japan's animistic traditions seeing divine powers in nature (in this case a centuries old camphor looking over a small village) mixed with nostalgia mixed with childhood wonder, that magic that turns an acorn into a troll, a bus driving at night into a cat running on electric wires. I think the dad cannot see Totoro the way only a child can see him, he's got a grownup understanding of nature, tradition and spiritualism, but I love how he totally encourages his girls exploring these concepts their own way.

Elisa DL

Yes Grave of the Fireflies! i want pain, i wanna see tears! 😂but in all seriousness i didnt even thought about Studio Ghibli for a pivot! But also if you'd consider reacting to Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Arriety and Castle in the Sky or any other Studio Ghibli films. If and when you'd get to travel to japan you should visit the new Studio Ghibli amusement park and film a vlog!

Ashley Lariosa

Definitely wouldn’t recommend Grace of the Fireflies as a first watch lol. It’s rough

Eric G

My first Studio Ghibli film was Grave of the Fireflies and I was hesitant about watching anything else. Thankfully Totoro was the next one and after that, I was ready for all the good and sad without knowing exactly what I was going to get. I was going to jokingly suggest Grave to be next, but I figured if you guys hadn't seen it, you would have at least heard something about it.

David Lonewolf Wright

all of these are great picks for them to watch

PhoktheCriminal

This reaction made me absolutely happy and brought tears to my eyes seeing your reactions and emotions for the film. Studio Ghibli has a very special place in my heart so getting to experience it with the three of you just adds another layer to it. Can’t wait for the other movies! Fun fact! My Neighbor Totoro was released on the same day as Grave of the Fireflies. Even though Gave of the Fireflies is technically the first release for Studio Ghibli, they knew it would be such an intense watch that they released Totoro the same day to make people feel better. I just discovered this recently myself haha

Felicia B

Another feel good, light hearted, Miyazaki film is Ponyo. In my opinion, it’s super underrated, but has a similar tone to Totoro. Wolf children, Your Name, and The Boy and the Beast are also some of my favorites. The Satoshi Kon films have more of an adult tone, especially Perfect Blue and Memories ( very trippy). Then there are the classics, Akira (which you guys are watching next), Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll and Vampire Hunter D.

Aisha Kenya

Yay so awesome!! Very surprised none of you had seen this before! 😄

Crowned Cryptid

Tokyo Godfathers rules. Definitely a must watch for the Patreon around the holiday season!

Bradley

YESSS! May I humbly recommend y'all check out the films of the late, great, Satoshi Kon (if you haven't already). Paprika, Millennium Actress, Perfect Blue, Tokyo Godfathers... all bangers.

JLee

Omg I’m so hype you guys are jumping into Miyazaki films! I’m hoping Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke is next!

Aisha Kenya

worth every penny for the HBO Max and Patreon tier. Congrats! You made it through Totoro :D

Emily B

I am really happy to revisit this one! I am guessing you watched it dubbed. If you ever go back to it (or any of these) for a re-watch, I suggest watching it subbed, the voice work really adds to the experience (and you'll know the story by then).

Rebecca Solomon

lol Anddddddd my Czechxicans question for new Q&A answered 3:39 into this video......dubbed versions thanks!

Justin Perlow

I'm so happy you ventured into anime. I'm gonna watch this one now and can't wait for you to drop the Akira one. I have seen this one by the way, but it has been ages....

Michael Pallada

OHMYGOD!! How exciting to watch this with you guys for the first time! What a treat. Such a lovely film. Will get to this when I get home!

discobean

YES!!! This was one of the very first animes I ever watched.
