House of the Dragon 1x1 Uncut Reaction!

What's up, homies! We're finally doing it! We're finally jumping into the Game of Thrones universe and beginning with the new prequel series, House of the Dragon. We all have very interesting entry points into this universe, but we're excited to see where this story takes us.

House of the Dragon 1x1 Uncut Reaction!

Also, please don't be afraid to give your negative opinions on the show. I would love to hear your perspective and gain a new outlook on this story. There are so many ways people interpret character actions and story telling. Stay safe and have a great Mother's Day!

Yall did great! Welcome to the world of GoT. I completely relate to the difficulty of remembering names, houses, and places. There's a lot of them! I remember watching the original series and missing out on so much stuff, but rewatching and picking up on these details is so much fun. Don't worry about the comments that complain or fret over missed dialogue. This show is packed full of stuff. Its impossible to catch everything.

Y’all doing visions again?

I love to see you guys diving into this world. I had a very similar experience as you all when I first started watching Thrones. I recognized it was a well made show but it just did not hold my attention. But I tried again years later and I was able to comprehend the lore a lot better because of how prevalent it became in my social media. I was instantly hooked. I DO have to turn off the part of brain that is looking for the (H)ero to root for lol I don’t think GRRM is interested in telling that kind of story. The treatment of the female characters in Thrones is NOT great. But i will say HotD is slightly more bearable. While the scene of Queen Aemma being stripped of her agency, pinned down, and sliced open because the life of the male baby is deemed more worthy is horrifying; I love the way it echos the absolutely tragic words of Aemma to Raenyra earlier in the episode “The child bed is our battlefield”

Jennifer Fuentes

The Queen was never going to survive. They don't have modern medicine or surgical procedure. The choice was save the kid or lose them both. Not sure how people take it as "save the baby or the mom" I would love for those people to explain how exactly they would remove the baby and save the Queen.

Christopher

I liked it! I think you will appreciate the quality of this show. Will this be a one episode per week deal?

Martin

I would love for your guys to give it another shot and collectively watch GOT, sticking with the first couple seasons is well worth the pay off in later seasons and I hate when perceptions of shows reception leads people to develop opinions without viewing something and forming their own. You guys all seemed to love She-Hulk when that seemed to not be as well received, same with Rings of Power. I think there is good to be had in a potential watch along of HOTD and GOT, although the commitment to such a longer show for you guys could simply not be worth the return on investment.

Christopher

Hey y’all, long time fan and I’m so happy that you’re trying out HotD! My excitement is pretty high for you guys because A Song of Ice and Fire is my favorite fandom, so I hope you enjoy it (if not, that’s cool too haha). I took some notes during the episode and if you’re willing to oblige my fansplaining below, hopefully some of what I have to say can help you understand a little bit better for the rest of the season. 1. there is magic in the world, however the people in power (lords and kings, the maesters/doctors, and the religious faith deny its validity and existence). The dominant faith in Westeros is called “the faith of the seven”, so any religious jargon you hear is related to that. 2. This show is based off a book titled “Fire & Blood”, which is a history book about the Targaryen dynasty. However, the book is comprised of many witness testimonies….which differ a lot. So the draw of this show is that we are finally seeing “what actually happened” surrounding the widely known historical events. 3. You may encounter people saying “the dance” online. It refers to The Dance of the Dragons. I won’t say anything more on that, but essentially it is the reason that this project was picked by HBO as the first successor show to GoT. 4. The pilot episode was really graphic and had bits of gratuitous violence, things I hated about GoT. But the rest of the show is toned down from what you just saw. I feel like it was written to cater to GoT fans opposed to a general audience of new fans? Who knows. I’m not a fan of it though, the birthing scene is really tough to watch. 5. Ramin Djawadi is amazing. I know Hector loves a great score, so trust that the music will be fantastic throughout.

So excited y’all are starting this 🥹

The thing that's always pulled me in with Game of Thrones is that GRR Martin took real history for inspiration and then went "How can I turn this into a Tolkien like fantasy?" A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones was inspired by the War of the Roses while Fire and Blood, the book he wrote that this show is based on, was about a part of Norman England history from the 12th century called The Anarchy. The political side of this universe is what I love because it's pretty realistic to the sort of conniving, power hungry stuff that would have historically happened that everyone kind of just ignores.

Reece Hart

The birthing scene (and later stuff) is painfully accurate. What drives me nuts more than anything else is how ignorant modern people are with how incredibly dangerous births were for women. As much as I love the whole Maester Conspiracy, Maestor Mellos was correct in saying it was either save the child or lose both. It's hard to gauge at what technology level the ASOIF universe is in but given how it's presented, I'd assume it's somewhere before the apex of the High Middle Ages in our own timeline. Which means that one out of five women will die in childbirth, a statistic that doesn't account for how dangerous breech births are. Aemma was already at an extremely high percentage chance of death via sepsis well before the forced caesarean. Also as an aside not related to the reply I wanted to make, I found two things really funny. 1. That Lord of the Rings is somehow a "little person story" given how everyone with a major part in the story besides Sam (and Gollum) were either nobility, a divine figure, or extremely wealthy in their own societies. 2. That "white people" are somehow responsible for both jousting and artificial language choices made for the show. Really comes off as an ignorant comment, though I get it's mostly meant to be playful that sort of stuff is really dumb to say. For the former, there are records of so many horse-based melee activities beyond just the classical "French" joust to pick from, stretching from the steppes to the new world. Though quite a few famous Spaniards took part in much of what was displayed on screen, if I had to focus on a particular group. As for the latter, language is just language. It's not specific to any one particular skin color and many characteristics that one might attribute to a specific group can be found in a wildly different one. Perhaps one of the more beautiful aspects of humanity, how we find so many similar ways to talk with one another.

I'm a family tree-searcher, so I basically already know who Is who and who Is related to who, but it's fun to see people connect the dots. I have also read all the Song Of Ice And Fire-books. I would absolutely be up for a Game Of Thrones-rewatch (first time sort of for you guys) if you guys decided to dive into the original show that spawned this. It's always interesting to have distinct viewpoints of someone who has seen a little bit more than the other and your analysation of plots and effects would be fun to have in the Heroes Reforged-library as a bonus to rewatches or first time-watches people do in the future, but it's of course quite an undertaking. Also selfishly I would really like you guys to do Doctor Who eventually because Matt Smith is excellent in that and it's lore is as fascinating as Star Wars and Star Trek are and it is even older than Star Trek by 6 years. I have seen every episode and spinoff from 1963 to now in that universe and I have met a lot of actors and Doctors at conventions in England and beyond, so that world is near and dear to me. Really love that you guys dive in different genres and go in deep with revisiting all the recent stuff too. No rush of course on all of that, but I feel that a lot of the big things might get delayed by the writers strike, so who knows right?

Hidde Heikoop

GOT 1-4 and spurts of 6 are FUCKING GOLDEN. As well as HOD. Glad your at least giving HOD a try it’s intense but the journey is good!!

I loved this first season of House of the Dragon. I am excited to go through it again. Honestly, I don't mind when you guys are quiet and really paying attention. Deep concentration and occasional laughs and gasps are just as much a part of the reaction experience. I didn't watch Game of Thrones until the pandemic times. I had missed the boat and heard so many spoilers that I thought "why bother?". But it ended up being really fantastic ... for a while. The last two seasons are pretty bad. The writing just takes a huge nose dive. Which is why this season of House of the Dragon was such a nice surprise. It is very well written and the performances are fantastic. I heard from the creators that they consulted with a lot of women about the birthing scene with Aemma Targaryen and many felt it was important to show the brutality of that scene. That scene makes me so ill and sad. It's a heartbreaking thing to witness and creates so many complex layers to the story and to Viserys. That's what I love about the Game of Thrones style of storytelling. Characters are complex and flawed. They are layered human beings that don't always do the right thing but it makes for interesting stories.

Me again, I feel like the easiest comparison I can make for Game of Thrones and season 8 is of Marvel completely botched Infinity War and Endgame. All the build up certain characters just out the window because the show runners thought they knew more than the person who created the entire world.

Gurinderpal Johal

Can’t wait to see what Hector thinks about this first episode! I never thought you guys would actually watch any GOT content, this will be interesting for sure. What I will say is, this episode is pretty rough, but it does “calm down” a bit once the story takes off. It’s definitely not as intense as the original GOT and I was happy they chilled on all the violence against women in this season compared to original as well. Fingers crossed you guys will enjoy it for the story and character development
