The Last of Us 1x9 Uncut Reaction!

What's up, homies! It's hard to believe that we're already at the season finale of this amazing first season. What a ride it's been for us as non-gamers to experience this story in such a fresh way. We can't wait to see what's in store for us in this finale.

Also pretty straight up close to the game. The scene with Ashley was new (and a great addition that was very heart wrenching.) But otherwise, pretty darn close.

Yeah this is what made LOU the game and now the show amazing, and Pedro and Bella have been giving it their all. Was waiting for the build up to the hospital scene and they did it amazingly well. The music was perfect, you want him to save Ellie - but also you don't. It's the trolley problem and they don't want to give Ellie the chance to say no - which is wrong. But also what and how Joel goes about it is also wrong. I find it interesting that he kills the firefly surrendering and doesn't kill the nurses. I'm not sure if that's the only shred of mercy he has. Also yeah - Joel isn't a good person, he's not, and the show does an amazing job of showing the hints, until finally revealing it. What a series, a joy to watch it all with you. An absolute joy.

I was waiting for the hospital massacre knowing it’s what the season was building up to, and yet it still managed to floor me. It’s such good character writing I’m very willing to suspend my disbelief re: any medical inaccuracies. Because in the game, as horrible as the scene is, you know what Joel is capable of, you’ve been on a ten hours shooting and stabbing spree at this point. In the show you’re TOLD multiple times that Joel is capable of true horrifying deeds, by Tess, by Tommy, by Maria etc, but you’re never shown until the first hints in episode 8. You’re shown plenty that Joel is protective and loving and in pain, so when you realize he’s gonna go through everyone in that hospital it’s perfectly earned and in character, and you’re rooting for him, he’s gonna John Wick this place, he’s gonna Mando it up. It’s sooooo good to see every reactor go from excited to quiet to horrified. And I don’t want to debate here if what he did is right or wrong, this is a character study, not a procedural. Killing everyone and lying about it is both justified and unjustifiable, selfless and deeply selfish, he’s protecting Ellie but also very much protecting himself from the pain of losing her. We’ve been asked several times if doing evil things makes you evil. Was Henry evil? Was Kathleen evil? The narrative has led us to answer one way or another, until Joel. Is Joel evil? Depends on who you ask. Isn’t that so very human?

I actually agree on this, do NOT play the second game before watching season 2. As a matter of fact, you have all the time in the world to play the first game, because season 2 of the show is gonna be a long way away. And even then I read they're gonna do the second game in multiple seasons.

The thing that always gets me about this ending is how insane it is that Marlene and the Fireflies thought it'd be a good idea to immediately put Ellie under and go for the surgery. They were afraid she'd say no, just like Joel was afraid she'd say yes, so they both robbed her of any agency. If Marlene had taken the time to explain the science in detail, and run more preliminary tests, this may have been avoided. Hell, if she would have convinced Ellie, Ellie may have been able to convince Joel. Like Hector said, Marlene knew how dangerous Joel was and still took the path where he was most likely to seek revenge. For what it's worth, I also highly doubt the Fireflies would've been able to successfully produce and distribute a cure. Protecting their samples for however long it'd take to grow and mass produce them, surviving the countryside to give out the cure, not dying to raiders, cannibals, or infected at any point in that process? Nah.

NO NO NO NO 100x NO!! Do not play Part 2 before season 2. As someone who has played and loved Part 2, you will want to react to that in show if they follow season 2 like they did season 1. I promise you guys... my friend... homies... do not spoil that twist for yourselves. The game was great... but the show will do it better. And hey, if the season goes a different way then you can always go play part 2. But you can't unplay part 2. Shit will either make you hate the writers or... well... hate the writers. But some people hated them so much they wrote death threats because of Part 2 so don't spoil that shit for yourselves.

Jonathan Frederick

Loved watching you guys enjoying the show. Truly added to my appreciation of the series. The podcast said one of the operating room nurses was also a major voice actor from the second game. Spoiler, so I won't say who. I definitely think they will get more than one season out of the second game.

Having played both games multiple times, I just don't see how you could wait for the show to release Part II!! Lol. It's crazy to say, because Part I is a masterpiece (the game... and I would say the show at this point), but Part II is better is in every regard imo. It is just so much deeper and full of emotion.

Justin Strickland

So very happy I got to watch this with you guys. As a fan of the video game I think it's a great adaptation. Feels like so much love and care was put into making the show. And getting to come along as you guys experience the story has been a true joy. Seeing your reactions every week made me feel like I was experiencing the game for the first time again, in some weird but wonderful way. Just brought everything back. Thank you for letting us tag along and for being what you guys are 🌻 Hector's plan at the end also sounds great. If ya'll ever do play the game I might just shed a few

discobean

There's two or three seasons worth of material in the TLOU2 story. Note part 2 came out 7 years after part 1. You three should play through part 1 and then when part 2 starts play through episode by episode worth of material like Hector's doing with part 1 now.

Peter Evans

I know! Avoiding spoilers on Twitter can seem almost impossible, but I think there’s a way to mute some words through the settings, not for sure though…1 1/2 years is a long time, but hopefully no one spoilers it for you🤞🏾

Aisha Kenya

Avoiding spoilers of the second game on twitter right now seems almost impossible, I hope they're able to though.

Billy Hernandez

I'm gonna agree with everyone commenting on TLOU2 playthrough. The pacing and length is almost triple the length of the first game. Also they are splitting it into multiple seasons. Would be great for one of you to play it fully before it comes out and the others blind. The pacing and hopping around will be changed dramatically I believe for a TV audience VS you actually controlling characters and their actions. Whatever you guys do though I love how much your digging the show and woof is the next couple seasons gonna be a roller coaster.

Cody Rowan

It's nice that Joel was able to unlock the Trophy for hearing all of Ellie's jokes before the end of the game =P I half expected the trophy to pop up in that scene lol

Carol Rozendo

Also on top of cassie's point, if the cure worked. it would only protect people from turning. It would not protect them from the violence of the clickers and other horrible human beings either. Not to be that bleak it almost makes the cure pointless at this time in the story in my opinion. Ellie's choice was ripped from her by BOTH Marlene and Joel. She should have had a say on what she wanted to do with her gift. joel shouldnt have lied about how he saved her, but I think Marlene and the firefiles were more in the wrong by trying to proceed with the surgery/killing her without Ellie's consent.

Madison Berrett

Sometimes I wonder if people write these characters to specifically be dense as all out or did they think it's highly likely someone would handle Ellie the way the Fireflies did? They should have never taken Ellie away without letting Joel say good-bye. Did they really not think that through? They know Joel doesn't have a problem killing people, yet they think letting him wake up to find out they're going to cut into Ellie's brain and kill her was ok? They drugged Ellie, they didn't even discuss whether she was ok with them killing her or not. What if she had decided she didn't want to die when faced with the prospect of the end of her life? I hate to point out that advancements of the level needed for that type of research in DNA happened during the years of the apocalypse in real life. They wouldn't have enough information based on all the years of medical advancements that didn't happen because the apocalypse took place. I'm not buying the idea they could effectively create some type of cure based on a growth on her brain which is a physical specificity. As a parent, I would have never given in to the shoddy explanation that they "might" be able to find a cure for people "turning" after being bitten. Making people resistant to it doesn't solve the problems of the infected existing. They would still be predators and still run as much of the country as they do in TLoU. Should Joel have killed everyone? Based on the fact he wasn't handled correctly in the first place, they left him no choice. I'm a bit horrified by the Fireflies hubris. It seemed to me there was a lot of ego wrapped up in the doctor's reaction to Joel entering the room, like he thought he was going to be able to save the world overnight just because he had a chance to hack Ellie's brain up. The whole idea that the gunshots weren't heard occurring on the other floors with as many people as Joel killed honestly takes me out of the story. It's too unrealistic. Automatic weapons make a lot of big noise. I've loved this series so much with it's stellar acting and unique messages, but I felt like they rushed the last episode. Maybe it's because I never played the game, just watched scenes from it all cut together. I found the sudden ease of communication between Joel and Ellie after the David incident jarring. I would have liked to see Joel try to figure out how to help Ellie as opposed to him suddenly stepping into happy dad mode. I understand it was probably because the game takes such big time jumps and they only had nine episodes to get the whole story out within the budget, but again they want me to buy all of this, right? I know about The Last of Us 2. My hope would be that they learn from this season and give the story time to transition from the end of Season 1 to the beginning of Season 2. There are a lot changes between the two games and this series is the perfect place to explore Ellie coming to terms with what she knows about Joel's lies and how they navigate that together. Without that happening, I feel like they've missed the whole point of making this game all about the bad things that happen when you love too deeply and are completely ignoring showing the audience what better choices look like. I never lied to my child about the circumstances of his life. He grew up seeing the world as it was and made his own decisions about right and wrong. Like many other millennials he was able to break the chain and not make some of the same mistakes. I, on the other hand, found out at age 60 my mother had been lying to me all my life about who my father was (DNA never lies). Growing up was a lot harder because I didn't know I was bi-racial, yet once I found out a lot of things started to make sense. Don't bald-faced lie to your kids. Find a supportive way to tell them the truth, because when they find out what lengths you went to lie to them you may not care for the consequences. *shrug*

I'm predicting this show will sweep most of next year's Emmy Awards 😄. Both Bella and Pedro really shined in this (and every) episode. As well as everyone behind the scenes. Finished watching The Making Of.. special too. Thrilled I got to share this show with you lads, even if you weren't 100% behind it sometimes 😅.

All right. Now you’re right there with us in this space we lived in from 2013 to 2020 when Part II was released. The boldness and beauty of this ending is that Druckmann and team have stated that every reaction to Joel’s actions is a valid reaction, and there are multiple ways to interpret Ellie’s final, “Okay.” The utter exploration and multiplication of those themes in Part II make it a masterpiece. If Part I was like playing a movie, Part II is a densely-packed novel that I’ve enjoyed unpacking for three years. BUT. The best thing that can be revealed to you now is this. Merle Dandridge who plays Marlene is a Broadway actress. I saw her play Mimi in Rent toward the end but f that show’s run. Just… watch this video. Pleeeease do a blind reaction to this video. You won’t regret it. https://youtu.be/z8XN7eoZr0Y

With a show this big and an almost certain lengthy break between S1, and S2 I would recommend playing through Part II. I just don't see an airtight remedy for spoilers. When Pt. II dropped the bigots, and trolls did everything in their power to ruin the ending of that game before it even released by posting screen caps of crucial plot points, or the final moments of the game. It's been so fkin special to see some of my favorite people in the entertainment sphere experience this journey with little, to no knowledge of what lies ahead and to see how quickly it snares the heartstrings. I had Pt 2 ruined for me and I just don't want that for you guys. And that goes for any of you other beautiful patrons ❤️❤️❤️

OleTad1987

I would HIGHLY stress you guys try and avoid spoilers for S2! It’s that deep! And I would also love to see you guys do the play through of the first game, so you can compare and contrast the changes

Aisha Kenya

"I don't think about giraffes enough" took me OUT😂 so great to experience this season with the homies!

Emily

Loved seeing your reactions to this show! I've played both games and I believe it's been confirmed tlou2 will be split up between 2 seasons because it's a monster of a game. It's also a bit different narratively and I believe Craig Maizen confirmed that the general TV format might change some things up (can't really say much without spoilers). Basically your idea to play tlou2 along with the show might be really hard to do. Your blind reactions have been so great though! Whatever you decide will be awesome.

"The darker side of unconditional love," I love how this show and the game explored this notion. It was also great to hear Hector catch on everything, almost exactly how Craig and Neil explained it on the podcast. At the end of the day, it's an impossible situation that Joel was put in, and as a parent, there was really no way that he would let that happen to Ellie. She may never forgive him, but to Joel, there was no choice to make.

I would recommend playing the first but not the second like Hector said. Your opportunity to watch events unfold without knowing what will happen is really special and I want to see it live! Just avoid spoilers at all costs.

Welcome to THE LAST OF US hermanos! I've been waiting a long time to openly talk to you about this season and of the first game. Yes, a lot of, exact beats of the game were adapted into the show. I agree lying was not cool but, no way in hell would I let them take Ellie away. I'm not a Dad and I would do what JOEL did. So much so, that the Firefly's didn't even let them talk to each other before the procedure. Was wondering where would yall line up on the actions that took place. I lost it when Ashley Johnson appeared as Anna and when the Giraffe scene happened. Bravo to the show! But now... fellas... I'm Warning you now. You're not ready for PART II and what they'll adapt in the next season.

Ronin Unchained

Season 2 is gonna be a ride. Thank you three for your reactions. It was a wild ride!

Starkilla

I suggest yall play both games before season 2 since it will be super hard to avoid spoilers for the second game. There are huge spoilers that if you found out prior to season 2 will kind of ruin the value of the scene. As someone who has already played both games have been seeing so many hints/spoilers in the comment sections of videos/tiktoks/tweets. I think playing the 2nd game before season 2 is even announced is the way to go :)

Marlene C

This whole season was once again a pleasure to watch with you fellas!

Corey Strable

As someone who’s played both games it’s been great to enjoy your ‘virgin’ reactions to the story, and your theories, would love to see your reactions to the game and your opinions on what’s been done differently and what’s been translated 1to1. Season 2 is confirmed and Neil Druckman’s confirmed that it’ll only cover part of the 2nd game. The 2nd game is considerably more intense (well it was when it came out at the beginning of the covid pandemic lock down) and longer than part 1 and I could see them easily splitting it into 2 seasons if not 3.

SalopianDweller

As a parent, this was a rough watch. Because yeah, I can totally relate with Joel.

Corey Strable

Hector, idk if you guys listen to the podcast, but they said Ashley wrote Anna's note from the game before they filmed and put it in the coat pocket 🥺 and yes, that's a real giraffe!
