“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Naturally they became heroes.” Leia Organa of Alderaan, Senator Here’s a great article about that prologue. It’s more sympathetic toward the Emperor than I remembered, painting him as a sheltered leader surrounded by corruption. That’s from a certain point of view, from those who didn’t know he was a Sith Lord. https://coffeewithkenobi.com/an-examination-of-the-prologue-of-the-star-wars-novelization-by-guest-blogger-mike-macdonald/

I love the conversation you had about this show enriching all that comes before and after, just like Clone Wars did for the prequels. But I wouldn’t use the word “reframing.” It has always been there, since 1977. Hector hit on this we’ll. I remember reading the Star Wars novelization when I was a kid and being RIVETED by the prologue from the Journal of the Whills. I always wanted more of that. The terrible irony is that it one of the big criticisms of the Prequels was the “boring political crap.” That always sounded insane to me. I was like, “This is *literally* showing you how Palpatine came to power and the birth of the Empire.” But. To that point. Sigh. Andor deftly illustrates the power of great writing. Like you said, when you’re on the edge of your seat during a scene of three people talking and realize you haven’t breathed — that’s Breaking Bad level writing. And Lucas simply wasn’t that good of a writer. As an idea man, as the man with the plan and vision and drive and focus, he was incredible. He knew exactly how this Empire and Rebellion were formed. He just didn’t have the chops in the prequels to make it this engaging. Can you imagine? The prequels with this level of writing? Holy Balls.

Do you think the Rebels wear orange because of the prison uniform? 5,000 people just got spared from the slaughter. I'd imagine among them are the embers of the rebellion.

I was in a full body clench before this episode began in preparation, and hot dang did it deliver. Incredible writing, impeccable performances, just damned good television. It's a pleasure to share in your reactions on this crazy ride, thanks again for all you guys do.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who got emotional during the prison break/jumping scene.

Watching back knowing Kino has that moment, you can see him convincing himself and deciding to lead and sacrifice. He knows the whole place is surrounded by water, he knew he couldn't swim and decides to lead them anyway. That moment is heartbreaking cause he encapsulates Luthan's lines "I sacrifice my life for a sunrise I'll never see." amazing writing. This is art, more than anything else I have seen. I have no idea how Disney allowed this to be made, but I am so thankful for it.

Another example of a perfect episode where all the elements of storytelling come together to form a perfect whole: Tension build-up, emotional climaxes, phenomenal dialogue, outstanding acting framed in coherent and unobtrusive musical background. To paraphrase Agustin's Star Wars line on other shows (Mandalorian, etc.) a bit differently: This is exactly what I didn't know I always wanted from Star Wars!

This god damn show! Honestly every week is just 45 mins of stress but I am here for it and wouldn't have it any other way. Incredible writing. I couldn't even guess where it is gonna go in these last 2 episodes. Cannot freakin wait!

Justin Young

I just know that when S2 is out and rolling into Rogue One, I'm gonna bawl my eyes out

One of my favourite things about Luthen is how casually he lies and deflects for the sake of maintaining his cover. "We were invited but declined." And then every line after the elevator opened, and his speech at the end! Fantastic acting by Stellan Skarsgård.

"I can't swim" Good gracious, so powerful. In WWII, the British had broken the German codes. There is a claim that they decoded a German plan to bomb the city of Coventry. Intelligence informed Churchill and he ordered them not to warn the town, not to evacuate. He had to decide to sacrifice the city so as not to tip off the Nazis that they knew their codes. Luthan had to make the same decision. Make a 'small' sacrifice now so that when the 'big' plan happens, you still have that advantage. Most historians today believe that the British knew of a raid but not the location so Churchill could not have made a decision regarding Coventry. The story has inspired several fictional stories including a scene in Babylon 5.

I started following you for Marvel stuff. I'm staying for all of the Star Wars programs. PLEASE do reactions for Clone Wars, Bad Batch and Rebels. Your passion and knowledge would make those incredible watches.

Brian Campbell

Watching this the 2nd time and I am still sitting on the edge of my seat during the riot/escape.

David Lonewolf Wright

Brilliant episode. This series is at this point the best written Star Wars there is. The characters are layered, there is wonderful use of tragedy, and the politics is actually interesting. Brilliant.

Myles Away

I say it after every episode but Andor really makes me hope that someone at Disney is giving some thought into adapting Lost Stars

J-or-Dan

The tension is insane. It's actually wild that every latest episode of the show ends up being the best episode. How do you go from a line like "No more than 12" to "I can't swim". Luthen's speech is amazing. Him sacrificing the 50 men so word doesn't get out about the mole juxtaposed against the prison riot b/c 100 men were killed to try and prevent word from getting out. He really is using the enemy's tools. What a show

Weirwood

honestly, seeing Tony Gilroy do a daredevil show thats in the MCU and starts with Matt hearing half of all the heartbeats in New York stop would be so intense and so so good

Jake

The writing! The acting! The directing! The cinematography! The sound design! This show has got it all! Wow!

Remus

OMG! The lines are so well written. The true stakes of rebellion!

Peter Evans

Can you imagine how much more impactful that final scene on the beach in rogue one would've been if we had got this show first. The character develop here is so deep that I would've been ugly crying for a week.

Ryan Waugh

“I can’t swim” that was just heartbreaking 💔

Angelica H

"I've made my mind a sunless space. I share my dreams with ghosts..." 🔥

This episode!!! Between Keeno and Luthen... just AMAZING writing by Willimon and acting that blew me TF away! Somehow each week is better than the last and I'm still buzzing from my first viewing. About to watch with the Homies now!

Bran the Builder

I know what I'm watching on my lunch break!! In all seriousness, this episode solidified this as my favorite Star Wars project after the original trilogy. I know these are cliches at this point, but Star Wars has never felt more real that this show. I'm always pulling from RL when analyzing SW, but this series puts it on a much more realistic approach that you cannot avoid. The ideas of working for the good of others when you will never experience the fruits of that labor hits me so hard, and made me start thinking about the idea of legacy and what am I doing to impact the future, even though I will never see that sunrise. And I just hope we see more of Andy Serkis in this series. Please let him come back in some way.
