Yes, the chessmaster was a nice change of pace. I especially like that the show utilized Edward for something that isn't just completely goofy but more bittersweet. I am pretty sure the show wants to imply he died in the end - he just had to win the game first. Despite leaning heavy on the space-scifi, Cowboy Bebop has shown a lot of tropes and themes from the Cyberpunk genre in the past - so things like the predatory health insurance and the crooked cops from the other two episodes fit really well with the rest of the worldbuilding.
