The code is laid out for none coders (like myself) who use logic like "well if this does this, then this must do this" in mind. so its not the finest. but its written so nothing is hidden!

You can have 16 steps on a nano by using resistors and diodes on 16 buttons, (much like the potentiometers), then you can use analogRead(A6/A7) for the buttons. This does require you to use the TX/RX pins, but if it's socketed, you shouldn't have to worry if you need to change up some code. A0-A5 + TX/RX(D0/D1) = 8 extra steps!
