Shrine of the Cinder Serpent

The power brokers of the Plane of Fire work tirelessly to expand the reach of their masters outside their native plane, for reasons both strategic and religious. The Material Plane is considered fertile ground for expansion, as the mortals there are naïve and easily manipulated. Millennia ago, the powerful efreeti Mazdyumi interfered with a cult of the Cinder Serpent on the Material Plane, attempting to deceive their members into enslavement and bring them back into the Plane of Fire for servitude. The Cinder Serpent, a minor demigod, eventually became aware of this plot and hatched his own plan to imprison Mazdyumi, his old rival, and put an end to his machinations once and for all. The Cinder Serpent conscripted the help of a powerful extraplanar magi to construct an efreeti bottle — and then planted the magi within his own cult on the Material Plane. When Mazdyumi drew close and let down his guard, the magi struck and successfully ensnared the efreeti within the bottle. The Cinder Serpent, pleased with himself but ever vigilant, hid the bottle in a specially-constructed prison on the Material Plane, where his jealous and opportunistic contemporaries on the Plane of Fire would have a harder time infiltrating. In the time since, the Cinder Serpent's influence on the Material Plane has waned, but Mazdyumi remains in his prison, suffering the mind-breaking monotony of solitary confinement.
