Tomorrow on Inside the Rookery: Adrian Tchaikovsky!

Andy Leask here to introduce this week’s guest. This book nerd is feeling blessed, as we once again have a terrific writer of speculative fiction joining us Inside the Rookery to share some sneaky insights into their creative process. This week’s guest is an incredible, award-winning author of science fiction and fantasy: Adrian Tchaikovsky!

We were meant to catch up with Adrian at Cymera 2023, but real life (COVID) got in the way. So we’re delighted Adrian’s joining us for his very own stream.

If you’re not familiar with Adrian’s work - you should be! He’s written some hugely popular, award-winning and influential sci-fi and fantasy, many of which feature inhuman protagonists. From his Shadows of the Apt series, a 10-volume epic fantasy series featuring humanoids with the characteristics of different species of insects, to the Children of Time series, which features uplifted spiders and cephalopods, Adrian excels at bringing to life these fascinating, and fundamentally non-human perspectives.

Fans of the Rookery will know that we love delving into the psyches of different species; see Lindsay Law talking about Elves and Dwarfs and my deep dive into the world of Halflings with Loremaster of Sotek for some examples. It also came up in conversation with Gareth L Powell and Tom Toner - safe to say, it’s an area of interest for us!

And, of course, TTRPGs are our bread and butter, and luckily for us, Adrian’s a keen roleplayer and LARPer, and even based Shadows of the Apt on his own homebrew #TTRPG world!
