Inside the Rookery Special: Remembering Russ Nicholson
Added 2023-06-12 18:40:04 +0000 UTCRuss Nicholson, who died last month, was one of the great figures of British fantasy illustration in the 1980s and 1990s. His distinctive style is immediately recognisable in some of the cornerstones of the field: the Fighting Fantasy series including the Warlock of Firetop Mountain; the Fiend Folio, the only UK-originated book published for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons; the Fabled Lands series by Dave Morris and Jamie Thomson; and work on Warhammer, Warhammer 40,000 and for many memorable White Dwarf articles.
Russ, who originally started work in advertising but quickly switched to lecturing at art college, was a fixture on the British scene: always charming and affable, dependable, and also skilled as a cartographer. Although his health had not been good for a while, his death was unexpected and he will be greatly missed.
Inside the Rookery is holding a special tribute to Russ and his work. We have gathered a number of people who knew Russ and worked with him over the years, including Sir Ian Livingstone, Marc Gascoigne, and James Wallis, to talk over their memories of him and discuss a few pieces of his work that hold special significance for them.
