Andy Leask here, with an exciting intro to this week’s Inside the Rookery guest: the great Gareth L Powell! Gareth is a bestselling writer and an active, positive presence on social media. An award-winning author, he has written 17 published books, and has become one of the most-shortlisted authors in the 50-year history of the British Science Fiction Association Awards. Two of his novels - Ack-Ack Macacaque (love that name!) and Embers of War - have won the coveted BSFA award. That last series is a particular favourite of mine, featuring a sentient ship and a damaged crew, and it’s all kinds of awesome - you should definitely check it out.

I first encountered Gareth online, being directed by my brother-in-law (hi Pete!) to his regular writing advice threads on Twitter. Gareth makes a point of offering helpful, supportive, and insightful advice to aspiring authors, and I became an instant fan. Recently, he published a book on exactly this topic, About Writing: The Authorised Field Guide for Aspiring Authors, which is packed full of sage advice, wrapped in warmth, wit, and wisdom.

And that’s exactly what Gareth will be talking to us about this Saturday: writing, and how to get started in the business. If you’ve read Gareth’s work, or interacted with him online, you’ll already know he’s awesome, but if not, join us on Saturday for some excellent insights and convivial chat.
