Welcome to Season 5 of Inside the Rookery! James here to introduce you to our first guest: Gareth Hanrahan.
Gareth is probably the most prolific games writer the UK has produced, with literally hundreds of titles for Mongoose Publishing, Pelgrane Press, Cubicle 7, Galileo Games and others, with important releases for 13th Age, Trail of Cthulhu, Night’s Black Agents, Paranoia, Conan, Traveller, Runequest and many others. Until Cubicle 7 moved to Dublin, Gareth pretty much was the Irish RPG industry.
When you read a Hanrahan book, you know it. You can tell when you’ve reached his bits of any game supplement he’s worked on, his voice is so distinctive: clear, erudite, filled with wit and creativity. He was the perfect designer to adapt The Laundry Files novels by Charles Stross into the Laundry RPG: he doesn’t try to copy Stross’s distinctive style, but he creates his own, equally memorable style for the book, and it’s perfect.
He’s incredibly hard-working, incredibly good, and genuinely one of the loveliest people in the games business. In case you missed his first trilogy, he’s also recently become a damn fine fantasy novelist: his Black Iron Legacy books have been opening doors and winning fans worldwide since 2019.
Now on the eve of the release of The Sword Defiant, the first book of his brand new series, Gareth joins the Rookery to talk RPGs, novels and how one leads into the other.
As always, if you have any questions you'd like to ask Gareth, either post them live this Saturday during the show and Lindsay will bring them up for discussion, or fly over to the Rookery Discord server and pre-submit your questions there.
We are live on Twitch, YouTube, and Facebook at 7pm UK time this Saturday.
See you on Saturday!
