Comic creation Q&A

I’m planning to make some posts about my comic creation process, since some people were interested! I feel I’m still learning about comics myself, so it will be pretty basic but, do you have any questions about it? So maybe I can help!

I have been doing my thumbnails & sketching short comics but I always end up just having the panels go downwards because I don’t really know what else to use! How do you usually go by where you put your panels and it’s shapes? I had a look at the templates and there are just so many!

Ohhh very interesting. Speech bubbles and sfx have a lot of visual weight so, it's one of the first things I plan when drafting the page. Composing comic pages is a really complicated topic but I'll try my best to explain the basics!

I'm not very good at writing prose as you do, but I'll try my best to explain how it works! I think everyone is curious about the writing stage, and that's really interesting.

Woah that's a complicated question... Usually when I'm feeling like that is a warn that I REALLY need a break. So I try to spend time on other hobbies, like reading, games... and of course hanging out with friends, going out for long walks and feel some fresh air. Try to enjoy some proper rest without feeling guilty because nobody is productive all the time. Also I think the biggest art blocks of my life happened when I was working on stuff I didnt really like but I didnt realize yet. When you're not motivated is very difficult to keep going. Ask yourself what really inspires you, what you really really want to do. Maybe you're on a different path and you need to fix that.

That's a very important question! Planning the pages is really important in case you're collabing for a zine or you don't want it to be super long. For Alta Marea I wrote the script in prose almost like as a simple fic and that's why it ended up being super long, but if I want to keep control on the pages I draw thumbnails at the same time I write the script. I'll explain all of this on detail soon! Thanks for your question!

That's a very important question! Short answer is, usually I do a brainstorming, I do a timeline of the things I want to happen and then, I do the thumbnails and the script at the same time, then I polish everything, and yes, when drawing the pages I put the text first! Text and sfx have a lot of visual weight so, its important to place it right! I'll explain everything in more detail soon.

Thank you very much! I hope to give some useful tips!

How do you plan the location of things like speech bubbles and SFX? Is it just kind of a ~vibe~ you get, or is it mostly strategic? Or, you know, a mix of both haha

Can you talk about the synthesis of writing and drawing, and how those two individual things change when they come together, if at all? I hope that question makes sense haha, but I've always been curious as to how writing for comics is different from writing in general.

This could go for any medium, but what do you do when you feel burnt out or reach an art block? I have those moments myself and knowing what other people do can definitely help!

Do you write out like a whole story or just the dialogue and thumbnail the images? I think everything around comic script is what always overwhelms me about it. Like, how do you know how long it’s going to be, how many panels something is going to take, if any of that makes sense 👀

I'd be curious to hear what the first things you do when starting a comic are? Especially with regards to figuring out word bubble placement, I've drawn a few comics without any dialogue and it seems intimidating! Do you start with a script, or like thumbnail sketches?

Please! I'd love to have some tips from you 👀 I'm currently learning to draw (for a year now), and I'd love to make comics with my OC and well... I'm lacking the skills! It's always a good thing to have someone giving live tutoring or stuff like that! And I love the dynamic in your comics, the expressions and so on! 🥺
