I remember you making a sort of snide remark about Olmar having an arc in one of the earlier episodes this season and thinking to myself “oh just you wait”

Olmar rightfully deserved mockery in his prior acts, but few can blame him for how misguided he was in what he valued as being a "real man". He had the lie of "Iron Fist Ketil" as his father, the absolute monster that is Thorgil as his older brother, as well as the Guests using him for their own amusement, all of this and society itself filling a sheltered boys head with how important it is to be a warrior. It took a catastrophic event for him to realise his faults, but he showed tremendous courage and strength to confront them, as well as standing up to his brother. Such a great arc for him. Fully agree about Thorgil too, he's an absolutely horrible bastard, but he's so pure in it, he is 100% who he wants to be. Have to love him.

I think when it comes to people like that, you have to actually get to know them in order to lower their guard and break that “primal barrier” so they’ll accept new information instead of rejecting whatever sounds alien to them. Stubborn/ignorant people require solutions on an individual level. For example I’ve been helping out a friend who’s on meth and been homeless for 5 years (he’s 20 now) it was difficult at first, but the more I connect with him the more he listens to my advice. Today I convinced him to break his meth pipe. It just takes time and genuine love

I think Oda (the One Piece mangaka) said something similar, saying “even I don’t know what Luffy is going to do in a given situation”. I guess that is just a sign of great writers.

Floki flying under the radar somewhat this whole show while seemingly being one of the biggest and most important villains

Olmar really hitting on some good stuff this episode. It's not easy to admit to weakness or to admit to not knowing what to do or being cautious. It's paralyzing at first and takes commitment and work to build back up into something that is more conscientious but also not avoidant of responsibility.

I've been thinking about this a lot and it's been coming up in discussions with family, especially in regard to groups. Any individual is capable of overcoming base instincts and rising to great heights of understanding, but across large groups it's hard to really bring people to that same level of understanding, and the workable substitute seems to be to use other biological incentives to keep people in line, such as fear of reprisal or death, which is not as rich of a motivational framework and is more easily undone. I'm not really sure what the solution is there except time and improving systems of learning / exploring systematically somehow, so that it gets easier and easier to reach a certain state of awareness or responsibility.

Olmar has had such good character development ❤️. Old Master continues to be the GOAT, ensuring Olmar has his say.

I think a few episodes ago, Floki did state that the Jomsvikings are allies and not Canutes men or soldiers, which could be some reason as to why he seems pushy with Canute. either way I enjoyed the reaction can't wait for next episode :D

Love this episode!! From Olmar's courage to Thorfinn's conviction, both of them metaphorically taking the first steps to solidify what they value.

I like what you said about the bird’s eye view. It’s frustrating when you can break down the situation in your head rationally but are unable to communicate with the other party because their perspective is so warped. It’s almost like trying to calm down an animal, but I guess we are animals after all

Yukimura Twitter thread for 2x21 (this is one is edited down quite a bit because he went into manga spoilers) “Thank you for watching Vinland Saga Episode 21 ‘Courage’! When I watch anime, I am struck by how they manage time, how they use time, and how natural their emotions flow. Over the years, the characters stopped listening to me. Manga artists often say, “Characters move on their own.” Don’t try and make them do things they don’t want to do. From the point of view of the drama and the progress of the story, my manager has a request for this character to act like this, but usually the characters say, “I’m sorry, it’s not good for me to do that.” Stand up! Listen to me! I am the manager and god. Hayashi, thank you for playing Olmar’s growth! If you are born a Viking man, you can’t honestly say, “I’m afraid to fight.” A cowardly man has no value … Men are terribly timid about being seen as cowards by others. That means Olmar’s confession of being a coward is an act of great courage.”
