She’s so young too… and she’s essentially lost her family twice. First when she lost hjalti and separated from gardar plus put into slavery, then again she officially loses gardar and she lost another child. Being around her age as well, I can’t imagine what it must feel like or how I’d process it

Cheesebit

I believe that line about God was when Caute said that shortly before visiting his father for the first time after his “awakening”. It was Thorfinn remembering Canute saying that and understanding it

Rudy Strother

I'd definitely enjoy seeing a family reunion. I'm not sure exactly how to explain it but my feeling is that the scope of what he's involved in makes it not as pressing. That might sound cold, but at the same time, I think one extension of "I have no enemies" is something like "everyone is my family." So I could see him never going home, as sad as that might be on some level, to do things like save as many people as possible, which are people just like his family, or Einar's family, or the family of any unknown person.

Alex G

Yah i felt that too although he has business to settle with Canute he definitely needs to see his fam I think thats just as important.

M2GZ

Oh man, this episodes title is so correct. I loved the reaction and wanted to ask if anyone knew if the part talking about god was Thorfinn or was it Canute? I am always surprised by your takes and views on the story and characters. When I first watched however I thought the speech about god was Canute. Either way, enjoyable as usual and can't wait to see more Goodwin reactions!

Emman Reed

man....... Arnheid story is just soo tragic, I have never had a switch up on a character like I did with Ketil, I hate him so much

Khalid

You will be able to catch things for the next season then. Enjoy the journey 😁🫡

Lalo

it was canutes monologue from 1x20. He ends it with "i wont forgive him". Goodwin actually reacted with a laugh and basically said "this canute dude has balls for taking on god". There isnt much about thorfinns religious beliefs in the manga except him listening in on snake reading the bible. Even this scene where hes thinking about canutes speech is anime original. but who knows they may add more anime original scenes about thorfinns religious beliefs. i think Yukimura may have avoided bashing on religion too much as it can be seen as a touchy subject.

Lalo

Wow that's wild, I started reading the manga from where the anime left off so I wouldn't have caught that. Such a bad ass line.

Sam B

its crazy because that line is an anime original one. the hardest line from thorfinn and it wasnt even in the manga

Lalo

Been on the Patreon for like three years now and every now and again we hit this perfect stride where two shows are peaking at the same time. This stride with Vinland and Haikyuu is a really good one ✌🏻 P.S. Looking forward to someday seeing your reaction for To Your Eternity S2 but I’m a patient man lol

It feels like your conflating physically going back to Iceland to metaphorically going back to the past. But that doesn’t really work. Obviously he can never go back to his childhood, things can’t go back to before but he does still have his family there and he should definitely go see them and probably will.

Mortis

I Also belive that it was Canute monologuing while thorfinn looked into sky. And if I remember coreectly this revelation that God is actualy letting people die and suffer is one of the things that gave Canut determination to try and create the "Paradise" on the earth.

Marko

I wanted to write the same thing, for me this is the one of if not the one most baddas line ever. It gave me chills. The confidence and the strenght just wow Thorifinn is on another level

Marko

That's an amazing story. Thanks for sharing. And also, wow! I hadn't realized the connection between the white images.

Alex G

@Sacha Yoooo! Hinata is one of my favorite protagonists as well! I wasn’t necessarily enthralled by him at first, but at the end of the manga he was my favorite. Just randomly wanted to put that in.

Chris Sharpe

I was an emotional wreck for this whole episode. I really broke down when Thorfinn started telling the story of Vinland, particularly the shot where he's holding the back of her head, and we have the pure white background. Just instantly invokes the same shots of him clutching at Thors feet as he stood dead, as well as holding Askeladd as he drew his final few breaths. It really is a monumentally difficult path ahead for Thorfinn, but now he's taking those treacherous first steps, looking as convicted and mighty as his Father in that final scene.

MisterRathrion

Thorfinn 2x3 - “Why do we have to fear death? Do we live because we don’t want to die? Does anything good come from being alive? Not for me. Not a single good thing has happened to me in my entire life.” Thorfinn understands Arnheid completely and utterly to his very being. In the series 4 images are linked together by the visual language of the white void surrounding it. The first is Thors riddled with arrows, embraced by his little boy. The event that destroyed the boy’s innocence. The second is Askeladd slowly dying and being held up by Thorfinn. The event that forced him into finding his true self. The third is Thorfinn alone stating that he is “empty”. The time of his life of true self discovery and deconstructing himself. And lastly fourth, is Arnheid dead being held by Thorfinn. The event that seems to have solidified his life’s mission and purpose. It’s truly stunning work in visual language. I was watching season 2 with a friend of mine each week. He’s an anime only and while he really loved season 1 while we were watching in 2019, it didn’t make any of his favourite lists at the time. However after watching this episode he had a real emotional breakdown that I’ve never seen from him before and he said “I wish I had Thorfinn when I was a teenager”. He told me about the anger problems he had growing up, got into wrong crowds and got into a lot of trouble, and that it took him a looong time to break out of the downward spiral. After this episode he said that he has so rarely come across a story that handles self improvement and healthy masculinity soo effortlessly and Thorfinn almost certainly will probably become “my favourite character in anime”. Thorfinn is without question one of the best examples of healthy masculinity out there. And yet he is still a work in progress. He has soo much to learn, think about, and put into practice. We finally see Thorfinn as himself. His true self. I can never fully articulate how much he means to me. Soo proud of this man ♥️

Sacha

Gotchya, I didn't realize that was a monologue that Thorfinn had actually heard before and internalized.

Musicisum

That's true FMAB is a great example of that as well

Alex G

It was definitely. It actually comes from a scene in 1x20 (yep a whole season later) where Canute is talking to Askeladd and Thorfinn. He ends that speech with “I’ll never forgive him” and the shot of Canute is in direct parallel to the same shot in this episode with Thorfinn. Both of these characters looking up to the sky or ‘god’. One in disgust and one in defiance. Also demonstrates that Thorfinn was always listening in the first arc.

Sacha

I watched it again and still can't really tell, though yeah it does sound like Canute. Nevertheless it's Thorfinn's scene, so even if it's Canute's words and even if Thorfinn isn't directly thinking about "God," my interpretation is that he has a conviction or answer around that line. Hopefully that becomes clearer later.

Alex G

@AGoodwinTV reminds me of what you said at the end of your FMAB journey. At the start of the anime you expected the journey and destination to be darker because of the place the story begins. Not to say I don’t respect stories that start light and end dark. I love stories. Period. In all its forms. But there’s something special about stories like these. “The result is like a good argument” is a great way of putting it.

Sacha

@Bighead absolutely! I mean my favourite character of all time is Hinata Shoyo and I adore soo many amazing ‘sunshine’ characters. Thorfinn is my 2nd favourite and really that’s only because his story has not finished yet. The manga is in its final arc and I can make a proper judgment once I’m seen his complete journey. But the journey that Thorfinn has gone on up to this point is soo beautiful and beyond words really

Sacha

I'm pretty sure it was actually Canute monologuing about God, not Thorfinn. Thorfinn's never really shown himself to be religious at all, and it sounded like Canute's voice.

Musicisum

It's been extra special for me to watch these episodes, particularly for Thorfinn. It's another case of something very timely, something I needed to see. In the storylines for Tekken, they refer to the ongoings as the "King of the Iron Fist Tournament." Random / dumb story. When I was in high school 8 of my friends decided to hold our own "Tekken tournament." We got together and had a UFC rules fighting event in the park (I lost in the 2nd round). I was so into it, I had carved a small Tekken trophy out of wood, and we called the event "The King of the Wooden Fist Tournament."

Alex G

Very interesting. In yet another comparison to AOT, I think that is one of the things I came to admire most about that show, though it comes through in the messages of the show as a whole as opposed to a particular character (and certain characters seem to be a reverse Thorfinn). There's something compelling, to his point, about taking it all the way to the darkness first. Like, let's really look at the depths and not sugar coat them. And then asking the question, "ok now where do we go from here?" The result is like a good argument, it takes on and strong-mans oppositional points such as nihilism, misanthropy, etc without dismissing them, and the result is so much more convincing. Thorfinn as a character is a human embodiment of that process.

Alex G

I think the brilliance of Thorfinn's character is his journey. While I do also really enjoy "Born a good boy" characters like Yukimura says, Thorfinn's character somehow feels more impactful because of his journey to the growth we're seeing.

Bighead

"They only brought 100 men. Even if the worst happens, I'll be able to make it back alive." -Thorfinn son of Thors

Sam B

God, this episode gave me such chills, especially the end. That quiet confidence, that determination. This, I think, is the moment when Thorfinn is finally, fully realized as a Hero (or in keeping with this series, a True Warrior). At least, this is the start of that journey, which everything before has been building to and preparing him for. Thorfinn is basically my ideal -- like, whenever I've pictured a perfect "hero" character in my head throughout my life, they were always pretty much exactly this. I think ever since I saw The Lord of the Rings as a kid and fell in love with Aragorn (although he's less of an explicit pacifist), this is the kind of man I've wanted to strive to be, however great my failings have been in reality. The strong, gentle protector. And it's incredible that we've seen his whole journey, everything that led him up to this point, and it actually feels real and believable. I still get teary rewatching this episode (and for Arnheid, of course). ...... ...Side note, I've watched this episode, and most of this season, a few times now and just realized that the "Iron Fist" in "Iron Fist Ketil" is "Tekken". Never knew that's what that meant. 🌈The More You Know🌟

Yukimura Twitter thread for 2x20 “Good morning. Thank you for watching Vinland Saga episode 20, ‘Pain’! Thorfinn cries for his friends. He consoles Arnheid, worries about Einar, and tries to save the people on the farm. I really wanted to draw this. I grew up reading shounen manga when I was a boy. The main characters of shounen manga are all good boys since they were little, right? Born a good boy. That’s a problem for a hopeless child like me. ‘An ordinary, hopeless child awakens to the personality of the main character.’ I wanted to depict that process. … I don’t know, I can’t express my feelings well this time. I keep writing and deleting tweets. Let’s give it some time. See you next week!” (Shorter one this week. So I thought I’d add to it a bit with something else he has said in one of the manga extra contents. This excerpt further explores why he wrote Thorfinn) “As long as manga is entertainment, I recognise that it is the creator’s job to make something that readers truly want, and can enjoy. A triumphant hero who’s super cool in battle - I understand that that’s what the audience desires. However, I racked my brain over whether or not I could create a hero that’s even more awesome than the aforementioned battle ready protagonist. Then I realised it’s also my job as a creator to try really hard to make this kind of hero… I’m illustrating a hero I believe is awesome, from the bottom of my heart. Perhaps it is unbecoming of an entertainer to be so selfish, but if my readers can embrace this - well, nothing would make me happier. I’ll work hard to be worthy of your continued support.”
