I'm pretty annoyed that they didn't show leif and thorfinns, reunion like what's up with that

Katsuki BakuGOAT

As you said, Im pretty sure that the wolf and the stag are Thorfin and Einar, respectively.

ODIS

I just said it for the pun 😭

Musicisum

the deer and wolf scene in this episode was so great when I watched it. I loved the reaction and cannot wait for the next :D

Emman Reed

It's not the same. Snake is withholding his identity, because he's in hiding for his own safety. Keitel stole someone else's identity to serve his ambitions.

Natasha Crandall

Snake criticizing the master for pretending to be someone he's not while his own identity is hidden........ you might say it'd be the pot calling the Ketil black, ayoo.

Musicisum

The old master that they are upset about not saying goodbye to is Sverkel, not Keitel.

Thorgil seems to be added to Goodwin’s blonde hall of fame. Come to think of it, Onizuka in his pfp is also blonde.

Monster I've seen :)

I totally forgot. But just watched it. The "might is right" line comes full circle I see. Definitely was confused about the old master line but yeah that makes much more sense. And that cart connection is crazy!

I can’t remember when you said this (it may have been last episode) but I share the same sentiment that the people who believe they wouldn’t commit acts of violence are in a way the most dangerous people. It all goes back to what Sverkel says about the ‘luck’ of your circumstance back in 2x16. I don’t know how the hell I would react to an authority demanding violence from me. All I can do is hope my moral centre is strong, but also forgive myself if survival wins out. And oh my god I really thought you had watched/read Berserk already! Or was it Monster that you had already watched? Anyway you need to get on that! 😄

Ah! Did you watch the 18.5 video in your own time? I saw someone reminded you on the last reaction so I didn’t comment on it. Judging from your reaction to the start of the episode it looks like you didn’t. Not end of the world! It’s just a scene that they obviously cut due to length of the episode. But it’s canon and was in the manga. Thorfinn in season 1 was continuously linked with a wolf. Some examples being his first kill was a wolf in 1x5. The imagery was also in the 2nd opening and of course 1x22 was named ‘Lone Wolf’ and was primary about both Askeladd and Thorfinn. So yes, very safe to assume that the deer and wolf in the forest are in fact Einar and Thorfinn. Prey and Hunter helping each other survive the deadwood. While I love Leif telling Thorfinn how much he has ‘changed’, for me I’d argue that the best word is actually ‘grown’. While I would agree a vast change has happened I truly believe and there is much evidence in the first arc that this, who he is now, was alway his authentic self. Buried underneath. To me ‘changed’ implies a complete different direction for yourself. Whereas ‘grown’ means he got lost along the way but he almost needed to go through all this life experience to get to this point. It’s something I’ve been thinking about since revisiting this arc in anime form. It’s so worth rewatching season 1 or reading the first arc to see all of Thorfinn’s great subtle character work. I really don’t like when some people generalise Thorfinn’s behaviour as just ‘angry boy’ in the prolouge. Sure, his character doesn’t progress much but he was much more complex then some people think. Also I realised after watching this episode back when it aired was that the first time we see Arnheid was in a wagon/cart in 2x2. That realisation devastated me. It feels soo symbolic that her (and Gardar) are tied to this object of transportation. An object that can take you to your ‘freedom’ or be controlled by your oppressor like in her introduction. Oh and also, I think you got confused when they said ‘old master’. Thorfinn is referring to not being able to say goodbye to Sverkel and definitely NOT Ketil. Hence “old master”. In fact a missing line from the anime that’s in the manga is Einar replying back to Thorfinn his regret of that too but he says “I wouldn’t bat an eye if Ketil died.”

One thing I love is that he consistently demonstrates a fear of himself and an acknowledgment of his own capacity for the very things he detests. The idea of things getting to a point where you can't speak against things you hate and know to be wrong is something that I think about a lot too. Would I be able to openly disagree or interfere with some kind of authoritarian state that killed dissenters (for example). Honestly, at this point probably not. On another note, I have to watch Berserk eventually

Yukimura Twitter thread for 2x19 “Thank you for watching Vinland Saga episode 19 ‘Battle of Ketil’s Farm’! We have finally met with Leif. Arnheid is in a bad state, the army is here, and Thorgil is terrifying. A big deer and a small wolf in Arnheid’s mind. It’s an interesting combination. Creatures of a nature that normally wouldn’t be friends. If you came across such a combination while hiking in the mountains, you’ll be moved too. It would be interesting if this was the appearance of ‘Animal Land Saga’. (Animal Land Saga is a comic strip that the creators released each week with the episode that features the characters as animals in funny scenarios that are based kinda on the episode. Thorfinn is a cat, Canute is a polar bear, Askeladd is a owl etc..) What kind of person was the real Iron Fistt Ketil? If I don’t know, no one will know. Oh! Canute’s helmet. It was troublesome to draw … it was fun when designing, but when it comes to drawing, it’s hard. Take off your helmet before battle, Canute! Berserk is really unbelievable, isn’t it. That intricate equipment design. No compromisers. (Don’t sell yourself short Yukimura. I adore his art. But yes, Miura’s art in Berserk is almost inhuman at times so I can kinda see where he is coming from 😄) Throughout the Middle Ages, battles were usually on the order of hundreds of men, on both sides. It’s rare to have a battle that exceeds 10,000. It is said that even the total force with which William, Duke of Normandy, conquered England was about 7,000 men. Disease were prevalent all the time, so the total population did not increase during the dark ages of Medieval Europe. There was a chronic food shortage untill potatoes came in. I can’t draw potatoes in the meal scene. Potatoes are great. Grows well anywhere. When I draw war, I try to make it feel like “I don’t like it…” What should I do if everyone around me is soo eager to go to war that I can’t even say, “I hate it, I’m scared.” But Japan used to be like that too.”
