Whole life can be seen as one giant game.

Thank you both for your kind words! Hayashi is such a great composer. Of course doing both MHA and Haikyuuu and many others. But Run with the Wind’s soundtrack is without question one of my favourites and I can see why he still thinks of it as his best work. It still brings his ‘hype’ nature of his music. But it’s maturer as well as mellow. Very much in keeping with the cast and setting which is older. I dunno what it is about anime featuring adult characters (19 to early 20’s) but it just hits different.

I love Fukunaga...his punned his way into my heart lol

Another lil thing: they could've make Tora just a tanaka double. And while in some ways he still is, I think this episode goes a long way to make him feel like his own character. He's more of an Ace than Tanaka at this point and has a different role on his team.

A little thing I really like is how this game feels from different Karasuno's games. Since Nekoma is a defensive team, the rallies are longer, the strategies are more long term. Where as with Karasuno, they're all about trying new yet short ideas. If a move fails, they lose the point and move on. When done well (as is the case here) this is easy to take it for granted. However as someone who's watched a lot of sports anime, it's very rare for games to actually feel like real games instead of vehicles for narrative. Not only do these character feel like real people but the sport feels real and imo more interesting as a result

That's what I'm here for, haha. ;) (The "Dostoevsky" joke when Fukunaga throws the bucket of water is basically the same style of stupid pun, and I'm glad you enjoy them. I just groan. I mean, at least they're only "sprinkled throughout" in Haikyuu. In MHA, Best Jeanist can't get through a sentence without saying how the fabric of society is held together with a single thread.)

When you’re done with the series, you should watch some of the dub compilations (not as a reaction just in your own time for your own enjoyment). While the sub is better than the dub, the dub has some comedy gold.

I always wondered about that "a-pass" joke but was too lazy to Google and figure it out, so thanks for that!! You really grow to love the silly little stupid puns sprinkled throughout the show.

Bighead

So sorry for your loss!! I hope you're doing well(as well as you can at a time like this). RIP to your little fur baby!

Most surprising part of this episode for me was that Goodwin did not have a vine-/roof-climbing story. Lots of stupid puns this episode. Forgive me. First, "Sarukawa." Get it? Saru...kawa. "Saru" = monkey. Har har. 13:09 "A-pass." So, first passes are graded A, B, C in Japanese volleyball. A = goes to where the setter already is. B = the setter can get to it, but they have to move to get it. C = it went off course so someone other than the setter has to cover for it. The Kansai pronunciation of the word for good is "ee," which sounds just like the letter 'A,' but with different intonation. So, "A-pass," "ee- (=good) pass." The "breathtaking scenery" at 13:30 is very nice, but the pink sakura flowers are also supposed to cue us in that it's the start of the school year, so Kenma and Yamamoto are new students at Nekoma. Speaking of Yamamoto, at 23:30 he asks to be called "Tora." I definitely would be hesitant to call someone that with a straight face. It means "tiger" in Japanese. Just.... like, the idea of calling a friend "Hey, tiger" is too much.

Very sorry to hear about your cat! Hearing that it's his favorite work is very intriguing considering how notable his music is

I really needed this reaction today. One of my favourite reactors watching my favourite story. Sadly my cat of 15 years died today and I’ve been pretty torn up about it. So when the notification came up that it was the Nekoma episode I really did laugh at the irony that todays episode is about our wonderful cat rivals. Wouldn’t have it any other way. Thank you for injecting a bit of good into my day! Kenma is such a joy and only gets better as the story continues. Without question one of my absolute favourite haikyuu characters and one of my favourite antagonists in fiction. He’s also soo wonderfully played by Yuki Kaji (you were probably already aware that you would recognise him as the voice actor for Eren in AOT). I can’t wait to hear him in particular moments coming up in later material for Kenma. Also this episode just reminds me how much I would love for you to watch Run with the Wind one day. Sports anime about .. well… running. 😄 but it’s set in a university setting. Same studio and composer as Haikyuu (it’s the composer’s favourite work). I think you would get A LOT from it.

I really love the fact that in the midst of a massive match for the main characters the show has no problem transitioning to another team and make it feel like we're watching the main character. This show does such a massive cast so well. They all feel like living breathing people.
