2023-08-15 19:13:43 +0000 UTCi think kanoka felt heartbroken because she saw how tanaka never gives up on anything,, including the person he likes (kiyoko). pretty bittersweet because tanaka’s dedication is what she loves and admires about him, but is the reason they won’t be together

2023-08-15 15:56:37 +0000 UTCI always wondered why people assume Tanaka is missing his chances with Kanaoka because of who he is as a person! Like there's been so many girls but not once has he looked away from Shimizu. He's just a dedicated guy :)

2023-08-15 02:54:56 +0000 UTCWhen she said that her heart just got broken, it hits differently. Tanakas impulse response was that his heart is set on another, which is true. But like the other 2nd years said, if he was genuinely told to stop chasing after her, he would. But he also doesnt give up. Tanaka doesnt just want to give up on her because someone else comes along that likes him

2023-08-14 19:50:34 +0000 UTCI love what you said about Inarizaki, because Goodwin was talking about how Karasuno takes what they learn from their failures and becomes stronger for it, while Inarizaki doesn’t spend time thinking of their failures and just guns for victory, constantly trying new things. Subtly different, but very much different.

2023-08-14 19:49:58 +0000 UTCThere's a really funny video where the members of Japan's national men's volleyball team have to pick a starting 7 for Team Japan from Haikyuu players, and they all try to justify putting Tanaka in despite knowing that he's not actually as much of a star player as the others. :) Actually, in the end, they do put him in as a pinch server just to make sure he's on the roster, haha. He really struck a chord with many (sorry I couldn't find one with English subtitles) https://youtu.be/gVqTPsAchN4?t=628

2023-08-14 19:34:09 +0000 UTCProbably my favourite episode in the whole series, and I thoroughly enjoyed the discussion and watchthrough. :) Relieved you teared up a little since I'm still not able to get through it without water works and it's been almost 2 years since it came out, haha. I have a bunch of language nerd comments, trying to catch up from previous episodes. Apologies for the length. BUT FIRST, THE MUSIC: The new soundtrack is called 合流, 'gooryuu.' They translate it as "back together," but it's wordplay on a few things. It's the word for little streams coming together into bigger rivers; the confluence of flows. It can mean how Tanaka felt all the stress piling up, or it can mean the accumulation of all his effort leading to a breakthrough. The word also could be read as "matching / meeting up with Ryuu," which is Tanaka's nickname, as in, he's coming to terms with his average self. https://youtu.be/FSDwPTwT6yc?t=51 It's a transformed version of Season 2's Omnivorous. I time-stamped them to the melody so you can hear how it's note-for-note, but in a whole new context: https://youtu.be/-Y_pLbaK878?t=82 25:40 "Why does everyone keep attributing everything to luck?" --> So, the word they're saying there is 'magure,' and it's the same word that later on I think they'll translate as "a fluke." It seems to be a big theme in the show to distinguish between things you get "as a fluke" and things you can do "of your own ability." Not sure how real that distinction is, but I can't get into it without spoilers. 13:52 The way Tanaka speaks when he introduces himself is pretty ... intense. Every sentence is even more gruff than it is now. For example, what would normally be "Yoroshiku onegaishimasu" was shortened and converted into just "chyaaasssu." Really turned up to 11. 14:51 The team that says the old Karasuno wasn't even worth the practice time is the same Ougi Nishi that was just obliterated in S2 in the background when Yachi was introduced. Nice callback. :) 17:59 So, maybe one way to help remember the twins' names (if you know a little Japanese). It's "Atsu-mu" ('atsui' means 'hot' as in hot-headed, hence he's drawn in warm colors and is blond) and "O-samu" ('samui' means 'cold,' so he's more cool and drawn in cooler colors). The Inarizaki banner, "We don't need the memories," I think sounds much cooler / more badass in Japanese. It's "omoide nanka iran," which is a really slangy, Kansai-dialect version that frankly sounds pretty close to saying "we ain't come here for no memories" in English. (In textbook 'Standard' it would be "omoide nado iranai") This came up with the greaser-hair purple uniform guy in Season 2, but basically most sports clubs don't really have a shot at winning tournaments, and in baseball, soccer, basketball, volleyball, softball, etc., every tournament is single elimination. A lot of 3rd year players might not ever get the chance to play in a real game. So, you spend three years on a "sports team" but never actually play in a game, and that's the experience of probably almost half the participants in high school in Japan. So, what did you get out of it? Why do it at all? The stereotypical answer is for the memories. People look back on this time spent with each other and think of them as formative experiences. Inarizaki's banner rejects all of that. They're saying, "we didn't come here for the experience. We came here to win. We're here for the trophy."

2023-08-14 19:20:03 +0000 UTCSomething I just want to acknowledge is Daisho (the Slytherin guy from the OVA) and his girlfriend. I just think it’s nice how they talk about the game, the girlfriend (her name is Mika) asks a lot of questions with genuine interest and he answers them concisely and clearly without any pretentiousness or gate keeping. It’s easy to fall into that, but he responds to her genuine interest with patience.

2023-08-14 17:46:31 +0000 UTCTanaka is not a star player in any technical sense, but despite that, (along with Daichi) he’s Karasuno’s paragon of consistency. He’s always positive, always persevering and supporting others. And he definitely takes on that role wholeheartedly because he loves his teammates, but it’s also doubly convenient because forcing himself to be that person helps distract him from his insecurities. It helps him to not internalize too much when things go wrong. However, regardless, sometimes things do go wrong and you get down on yourself, and this is the first time we really see how Tanaka responds to serious adversity. The first Seijoh game touched on it, but this is the real deep dive. Faced with some truly amazing players who view him as a weakness, it can be discouraging to be reminded of your limitations. But Tanaka’s strong, consistent, amazing attitude is his one excellent trait as a player, and with the help of his teammates, that lets him power through. One last thing that I love about this sequence is Tsukishima’s role. He passed to Asahi instead of Tanaka because he thought Asahi was the better option, but he was well aware that doing so would badly affect the spirit of the average player. But he knows that Tanaka isn’t mentally average, and through his experiences with him, he knows that he’d be able to keep his head up after that. So he isn’t being ignorant at all here - he just has full faith in Tanaka’s mentality. Also it's beautifully tragic that Kanoka realized that no matter what, Tanaka will stay devoted and loyal to his one true love Shimizu.

2023-08-14 17:25:43 +0000 UTCThis episode is where I really decided that I loved this show. This dude Tanaka gives me the drive I need some days and I might have to rewatch this reaction like I did this episode when I first witnessed Tanakas greatness.

2023-08-14 17:00:17 +0000 UTCThis was such a beautiful episode showcasing the brilliance of Tanaka's simplicity and straightforwardness. The quote, "To my average self, do you have the time to look down like that" is my favourite quote in the whole entire show of great quotes. And then seeing Tanaka achieve that insane cut shot after seeing Bokuto's, I tear up everytime! Not knowing the future of Kanoka and Tanaka, I kind of like how the jarringly straightforward rejection Tanaka gave Kanoka says a lot about his character. A lot of people overlook this, but his whole "love story" arc shows how while he loves the attention of girls and all, he respects Kanoka (and women in general) enough to not date her while having someone else(Shimizu) in mind. While it is kind of weird how obsessed he is with Shimizu (which is also probably played up for the anime), I kind of respect that he is self aware enough to know he can't give Kanoka the love she deserves at the moment.

2023-08-14 16:56:18 +0000 UTCWhen the second years are talking about how Tanaka is the only one in their year group that never quit the team it made me realise something when I first read this in the manga. Tanaka is the only Karasuno member (from everything we’ve seen) who has NEVER left the court and has played every single Karasuno game. No injury and no substitutions. This also included the very first 3 on 3 in the first episodes of season 1 (which Asahi was missing for) After the production issues of 4x15, every haikyuu fan breathed a sigh of relief (and cried) that the Tanaka focused episode got all the love it needed when this aired. He deserves it. He never misses indeed. It goes to show the vast richness of the cast that a character like Tanaka sadly doesn’t make my top 10. To be honest I could get to my top 32nd character (and beyond) and I will be still gushing about how much I love them. Without question one of the best cast of characters you could ever come across
