so great. I was also shocked when snake did what he did. But it also gave me great perspective for comparing snake and thorfinn and the differences in their journeys and the morals they hold. Can't wait for more of this and Haikyuu!!

2023-08-10 14:28:47 +0000 UTCFirstly, thanks to the stop and starting of the episode for your analysis I definitely didn’t weep throughout the episode like I usually do. However, just the sight of a lil kids feet kicking the air made me sob once again without fail. His little boy was waiting for him to join him. 😭 Gardar’s final journey is devastating. This episode doesn’t just give us this man’s life, but it’s a reminder of all the slaves of history and today. Sverkel called slaves “unlucky” last episode. It would be soo easy to judge Gardar as a victim of his dream of ‘honour and wealth’ but Yukimura never does that. There is an understanding in this lil arc that Gardar represents humanity clinging to life when everything has fallen apart. We don’t know when our “unlucky” turn is. And we may have the best of intentions just like Gardar did, but still fail. I never can fully articulate how I feel about this arc. It feels futile and inevitable that it ends in tragedy… and yet the combined efforts of everyone to make this man’s last ride peaceful… it feels enough somehow. Lastly I strongly urge everyone to rewatch the fight between Askeladd and Thors in 1x4 and then watch Snake and Thorfinn again here in 2x17. It’s practically a mirror. Thorfinn and Askeladd lost the fight in the same way, they thought they had the upper hand but they were both tricked into thinking that. They both focused too much on the technicality of the fight, whereas Snake and Thors looked at the bigger picture. Even some of the choreography and ‘camera work’ is similar. And now Thorfinn is left with a scar on his face, a reminder that his resolve failed that day. (I’ll explore that further in the next episodes)

2023-08-10 10:47:09 +0000 UTCSnake became one of my favorite characters of the show, I mean he is just a human who did horrible things and tried to humble himself into the farm life while not actually being a farmer, signifying he is still struggling with his past and being on the fence between the old life and the new. To me, Ketil trapped him to not fully adapt new life on how Askelad trapped Thorrfinn.

2023-08-10 07:51:16 +0000 UTCI haven’t read the manga myself, but all my friends kept saying the anime staff have adapted this season to near perfection and I couldn't agree more. About Snake, it was planned to have an original anime ep that delves into his past but unfortunately scrapped to prioritize the main story. Hopefully, it’s not completely lost and it’s gonna release as an Ova one day

2023-08-09 22:00:39 +0000 UTC@Eduardo Salamanca Definitely, also watching it weekly in gorgeous animation and music is better than binge reading it in black and white on a shady website.

2023-08-09 21:52:21 +0000 UTCim really battling if this is the best episode of the season, there are so many great ones to come, but this, episode 9 and maybe one that its still yet to come are so memorable, its hard to choose the best.

2023-08-09 21:40:10 +0000 UTCagree 100% the rest of the season is absolute peak storytelling
Why It
2023-08-09 20:04:51 +0000 UTCthe mature drama, the themes explored in this season and how grounded it is to reality is done very well, it’s a brith of fresh air in the anime sphere. It’s left even the mangaka speechless by how great the adaptation is.

2023-08-09 19:49:18 +0000 UTCI was gunna mention that! “That’s why I like nightmares better than good dreams” is almost a word for word quote from yourself. It’s absolutely correct for me as well. Even though my ptsd, and nightmares can be brutal they are somehow better than when for instance I dream about a loved one who is still alive in my dream.

2023-08-09 17:40:31 +0000 UTCI was looking forward to this one and it did not disappoint. I feel really connected with him from his tweets. I think I've shared the same sentiment about dreams multiple times in videos. And this: "For comfort in your present? No lie. I think it’s important to think about slavery when you’re not a slave, and think about war when you’re not in a state of war. I think I need nightmares because I live a carefree life." I could not agree more.

2023-08-09 17:17:07 +0000 UTCA real emotional rollercoaster of an episode while watching on release. We spent the previous week hyped for the battle between Snake and Thorfinn, maybe even a little anxious for how it would effect our boys moral choices and principles. It delivered on the great action, then gut punched us with an incredibly beautiful and sad send off for Gardar, a character we only had known for a few weeks, but still left a huge impact. I believe someone else commented it, but this last long stretch is what makes season 2 perfect and anime of the year for me. Episodes like this and Episode 9, along with many more to come, are some of the finest media I've ever watched.

2023-08-09 17:10:54 +0000 UTCGardar's story is so amazing, it is rly tragic in the end he got at least some closure.

2023-08-09 17:00:44 +0000 UTCfor sure, when i read the manga i didnt cry and had barely any connection to either of the two characters but the anime made it hit so hard. All of the flashbacks and afterlife sequences were anime original. My fave eps are 9, 17, 20, 22, 23, 24. Absolutely stacked season ngl

2023-08-09 16:59:41 +0000 UTCYukimura Twitter thread for 2x17 “Hello! Thank you for watching Vinland Saga Episode 17 ‘The Road Home’! Gardar. While looking at the future that might have existed, while being embraced by Arnheid. I tried my best, but I got hurt too much. Arnheid, who was left behind, is in a very bad situation. I think that if a person lives for a certain amount of time, there will be regrets. “If only I tried harder!” “If you choose this!” I think it’s very difficult to live without regrets. Gardar is a mass of regrets. A mass of explosive regret energy. I had a dream last night that I killed someone. I can’t remember why I killed him. In my dream, I left the corpse and ran away. I was running away. I couldn’t even face my family. That’s why I like nightmares better than good dreams. So you’re telling a story about war and slavery? I am. Unconsciously. For comfort in your present? No lie. I think it’s important to think about slavery when you’re not a slave, and think about war when you’re not in a state of war. I think I need nightmares because I live a carefree life. The scene in the carriage just before Gardar died. Everyone in the anime production team recreated Gardar’s feelings. Thank you. Thanks to that, I think Gardar’s soul will be freer than the original. Pain can be a little easier just by letting others know about it. (For context everything that you see with Arnheid and Gardar in the carriage is in the manga. And everything else you see is the anime team working their magic. All of Gardar’s inner world is purely anime content and it was the best addition the anime has ever done. As a manga reader it left me speechless and sobbing) The battle between Snake and Thorfinn. Please makes video of each move! The difficult condition is that the unarmed Thorfinn fights evenly with the sword-wielding Snake! Thank you! At the end of the day, Arnheid’s “welcome home” … it makes me cry. Why didn’t I write this line in the original!? Anime has such a deep knowledge of Vinland Saga.”

2023-08-09 16:57:48 +0000 UTCThe last arc is my personal favorite, but I have grown much fonder of this Gardar arc upon re-watch.
