2023-07-27 18:40:58 +0000 UTCIt's like 2 am and I cannot begin to comment on your discussion at the end because brain no work. But there's something so wholesome yet uneasy about the relationship between Snake and the tree-chopping bros. For one, they're slaves, and we're led to expect that they be universally treated with disdain. So when Snake just straight up doesn't care, I almost get the feeling of "where's the catch". But knowing what we know about all of them as characters, seeing them just chilling, eating, and laughing together is a vibe that season 1 could never have dreamed of. Closest I can think is when Ragnar led Thorfinn to discover soup that one time. How far we've come. 😭

2023-07-27 06:54:44 +0000 UTCIn regards to a lot of your thoughts on “Love your enemies”, it’s strange how that works and how strange it sounds. I enjoy looking at history because it is almost like a scientific study on humans. It’s weird, when I see all nations, all people, all cultures, all religions perpetually making the same mistakes and causing wars and conflict, I feel sort of…. content? As weird as it sounds. It stems from the idea that we are not that different from each other, and we all tend to make the same mistakes and have the same impulses. This means that throwing intense hate at people for their religion, nationality, or ethnic background looses all meaning, because all of this conflict comes from the same place. Animals do the exact same stuff, destroying other environments, killing other animals, yet there is no malice behind it, it is simply a survival mechanism. I think this ties into the “Short term benefit vs long term benefit” thing you mentioned, with animals just having short term benefit. So I think when we portray this kind of behavior in humans as something deep and vile that makes us worse than animals, it misses that it is just coming from the same place, not because our “enemies” simply think the wrong way and they don’t understand our totally perfect philosophy, but is an issue of objective safety and securing the futures. In that sense, we all want the same thing.

2023-07-26 20:30:30 +0000 UTCUnironically this episode and episode 6 “we need a horse” are my favourite episodes because it’s just wholesome slice of life with the gang. Also that bible scene was very well done.

2023-07-26 19:19:36 +0000 UTCOh almost forgot! This OP is mostly definitely my favourite (though the first OP of season 2 is hella good too). The visuals of this one were also done by someone that you will be very familiar with. The legend himself Tetsuro Araki storyboarded and directed it. Death Note’s and Attack on Titan S1’s Director (while also contributed ALOT to AoT S2 and 3)

2023-07-26 19:17:17 +0000 UTCJust as we think that there is enough to worry about with Canute on his way, dark clouds have already gathered at the farm. It’s such great storytelling! It would be easy to make the conflict of this story simple but nope there are many awesome characters on this farm so let’s give them a ‘problem’ to challenge them. I’m incredibly excited that you have finally been introduced to Gardar. That cold open is definitely one of my favourites in the show. Soo much is said with little dialogue (of course the dialogue that we do have is excellent on many levels too) but just the fact that you can instantly tell what kind of life Gardar has lead during his enslavement is phenomenal work. Which is further reinforced later with Snake’s comment to Fox. Also there’s another great lil bit of characterisation for him when without question he lets the women with her baby go (possibly the wife or more than likely another slave). Not gunna lie when I was reading the manga back in 2020 and I saw the Gardar cover, I honestly thought I spoiled myself on a Einar timeskip! There’s some very interesting similarities between how they both look. Very much intentionally designed, paired with earlier comments that Arnheid has made in the past. She has commented on Einar’s “good face”. But behaviour wise he is incredibly similar to our Thorfinn in the past. Gardar is now a vessel powered by one singular focus and he on the brink of his sanity. A man possessed indeed! Snake is soo unbelievably fascinating as a character. You can tell that there is a lot of kindness there and he hides it ‘well’. Though Thorfinn definitely caught on when Snake tries to deflect. Yukimura really does love writing ‘gentleness’ in all its shades. And now we officially know what he has been reading since 2x3. Being able to read, let alone the bible, means that you had a great education for those times. Just like Yukimura mentioned in his thread, the bible was really only written in Greek or Latin and he is having to translate it to Norse so Sverkel (and a curious Thorfinn) will be able to understand it. Also Bibles would be ridiculously expensive as a possession as it would only typically be seen in a church. Further reinforcing the wealth of this farm and the rarity of someone like Snake being able to read it. I can not express how much the dinner table scene means to me. Very similar to how I feel about the dinner table scene in 2x6. What can I say I do love when really great characters have the freedom and breathing room to just sit down and have a conversation. We as an audience know what’s coming and you just want to keep this lil family as safe as possible. And for me it’s a great call back to Thorfinn eating Canute’s food in 1x15. Same unabashed delight. One of the few times in Thorfinn’s boyhood years that he seemed at peace. Really enjoyed your long talk at the end. I really like when I can almost see your mind trying to catch up with themes that you are being presented with. Vinland Saga is definitely one that you need the gap between episodes to really absorb what you are watching. With your talk about ‘love your enemies’ I think it’s perfect to remember Askeladd’s exact words to Thorfinn. “Go far ahead. Go beyond the world where Thors went. That’s your real battle. Become a true warrior Thorfinn.” The key word is really “battle”. The idea of loving your enemy that is being presented in this bible verse can only be described as a battle. A battle that is life long as you may never find it in your world or within yourself. But that’s the beauty of Thorfinn’s journey. He’s prepared for that climb and battle every day. Anyway I think I’ll leave it there because this idea just keeps evolving and they’ll be plenty more to say later. Great start to second cour!

2023-07-26 19:08:23 +0000 UTCEinar saying he feels like he can't make a decision even now that he's going to be free from being a slave reminds me how people who have left prison after being there for so long find trouble living in regular society again. Like you live in circumstances for so long there's kind of a period of confusion when everything finally changes

2023-07-26 19:06:13 +0000 UTCYour long word salad got me thinking, you might be really fascinated to read the thoughts of J.R.R. Tolkien regarding human-kind's nature and relationship to the divine through creation. He largely speaks on these concepts in relation to his literary work (mostly his fantasy set in Middle-Earth), but it's generally applicable to humanity in a broader scope. He speaks on his religious beliefs, and the idea that mankind's purpose and drive in this world is to participate in the divine creation, and how the arts (in particular literature) are a wonderful analog for said creation. Really interesting stuff. I believe this is mostly found in his Essay "On Fairy-Stories". Definitely worth a read.

2023-07-26 19:04:26 +0000 UTCI never picked up on this before, and it might not mean much, but I just noticed in that scene where Fox tells Snake about Gardar escaping, Snake is reading the bible on his own. I guess he might not have as much disdain for it as he pretends, which seems to be par for the course with him.

2023-07-26 18:55:38 +0000 UTCYukimura Twitter thread for 2x13 “Let’s start the second half! Thank you for watching Vinland Saga Epsiode 13 ‘Dark Clouds’ everyone! Great new opening and ending. Survive said the Prophet back again. Welcome, home! (They were the band who did the very first OP) The voice of haju in the ending. Why do all the anime’s endings make me cry?! (same Yukimura! We are truly blessed with the music of this show 😭) Thank you for your wonderful song. The tapestry of the house at the beginning was great, wasn’t it? It’s like a very old video game. The backgrounds are always great. We manga production staff have already learned how to to pay attention to details from the anime. I wish I could draw like this! Oh yeah, this is the scene were Gardar first appears. It was a bit earlier in the manga and had a bigger gap between his introduction and Gardar’s rampage chapter. Thank you very much Seko-san (Seko is the writer of the anime) The anime goes through all my blunders. Anime is the complete version. Anime Denmark doesn’t have mountains. (Okay I’m chiming in here to say my goodness he is too humble for his own good. While I love his appreciation for the anime team I personally believe the manga is the better experience for me. The anime does change round order of scenes and sometimes that works for me and sometimes it doesn’t. Though I’ll never say the anime is a bad adaptation because you can tell how much love the team has for it. And both seasons are 10/10s. Personally for me though something is always lost in an adaptation, no matter how good it is. But not gunna lie, that line of ‘anime Denmark doesn’t have mountains’ is hilarious. He openly apologied recently that while drawing the manga, he failed to take into account how f*cking FLAT Denmark is and kept drawing mountains! Bless him) Being able to read the Bible is a great education. That Bible was probably written in Latin or Greek. But Snake can read it. I wonder who Snake is … Ohh Arnheid’s past is catching up. The story moves! The situation will change in the second half. It’s different from the quiet development in the first half, which focused on the inner side of the characters. It looks like I’m going to spoil something I shouldn’t do right now. Some people haven’t read the original! Look forward to the second half!”
