2023-07-22 02:23:46 +0000 UTCThorgil and Thorkell should fight. It's a match made in heaven, really. Keep them occupied for a while, and allow all the rest of these poor mortals to stay as far away from their limb-hacking as possible.

2023-07-22 01:26:34 +0000 UTCOn the note of thorgil and thorkell, they're both kind of similar in that they both seem to enjoy not just fighting, but more challenging fights. They find it exhilirating, exciting, or interesting. Like how thorkell purposely fought on the side that was more likely to lose, the English, so he could have the opportunity for an interesting fight, against warriors he knows are strong. Although in thorgil's case, it wasn't necessarily a choice to go up against Canute😅

2023-07-21 19:53:45 +0000 UTCI really loved that scene with thorgil, lit up literally (by the light) and his face, being so happy/thrilled. He is happily killing a bunch of other guys. In contrast, Olmar is on the ground, lit with shadows, covered in blood, while thorgil is completely clean of blood. Kind of like olmar feels "dirty" about what he just did, and he's feeling the gravity of his actions. Thorgil doesn't seem bothered by killing a group of people, and using the same analogy, feels "clean", or like he doesn't feel upset or bothering by killing. To him, violence is natural, as many warriors of that time would see it.

2023-07-21 19:37:23 +0000 UTCHonestly, I've been more impatient and on the edge of my seat waiting for a Thorfinn and Canute reunion this season than I have long lost lovers in romance movies/shows, lol.

2023-07-21 19:31:01 +0000 UTC@Bighead me thinking about the two words Yukimura uses later on in the season to describe a ‘man’ 😭😭😭😭

2023-07-21 19:03:44 +0000 UTC@Nick this man is an absolute sweetheart. I love how engaged he is with the fandom. Constantly retweets and comments with fanart and headcannons. Even had a interaction with a fan where they wanted to know their favourite characters birthday so what does he do? He asks them what their birthday is. They answer and then he just goes “well then that’s their birthday”.

2023-07-21 19:01:32 +0000 UTC@Goodwin while Yukimura has a lot of ideas and morals that he stands by, I do appreciate that he is a realist too. He understands the reasons why we function as a society and as humans too. This will definitely get explored further in the story

2023-07-21 18:58:54 +0000 UTC“With 70 of Floki’s Jomsviking we’ll have 102 men altogether” - Wulf 2x12 “You could easily take over this farm with 50 to 60 men” - Snake 2x6 and “What did I do to deserve that?!” - Ketil 2x12 “Too much wealth brings about misfortune” - Sverkel 2x6 Sorry Ketil, but burying your face in the sand (or in this case a barrel) is not going to work this time. Thorgil really proves how smart he actually is here. He clocks the weirdness of the eye incident. He immediately understands the situation as soon as the guards show up. He has seen dozen of duels over the simplest things that have ended with death and have had no repercussions. “Guys kill each other all the time over woman they can sell” - Thorgil 2x7. The fact that he originally expected no retaliation is honestly quite telling. But the fact that with no fear is genuinely excited for the challenge ahead is quite frankly disturbing. Literally going up against an established conqueror. Thorgil is the embodiment of a ‘Warrior’ in this Viking world and the worst type of person for the Vinland Saga world. Embraces senseless violence and gore with glee. And Olmar finally gets to witness everything he ever wanted and … well you saw him in the aftermath (by the way I adore Olmar and it’s great to get to this point for his character even if it’s horrific for him. Oh and I also love Thorgil for very different reasons!) What I find fascinating though is the relationship between the brothers, particularly on Thorgil’s side. Thorgil is actually very family focused and genuinely cares about them. Yes, we know about his misguided admiration of his father but everything we have seen of him in 2x11 and 2x12 he seems to really care for his little brother. Notice that he is never cruel to him, doesn’t tease him nor bully him for the pig incident or the duel that he has walked in on. The only thing would have been the necklace of ears back in 2x7 and that honestly is pretty harmless to the shit that we know he would be capable of. He really seems to want the ‘best’ for Olmar, or what he thinks is the best. But what do we end up with? One brother broken and world view shattered and the other proud and ‘sticking up’ for his little brother. That’s the genuis of Yukimura though. Characters like Thorgil and Thorkell could soo easily be one note but have such great depth to them. To be strong in this world isn’t just about strength, you gotta have the smarts too. I think we have all learnt to never fuck with anyone with ‘Thor’ in their name. Also Thorfinn and Canute looking at the same sunset from different directions is just pure CINEMA. The scene is soo beautiful that it’s like they are talking to each other. But honestly the idea that Thorfinn’s spider sense tingles when Canute is doing anything menacing is sending me!

2023-07-21 18:51:28 +0000 UTCCanute should’ve just sent both Thorgil and Thorkell to claim lands instead of sending a whole army honestly lol On a side note, seeing Thorgil being a beast makes me wonder how Insane snake is since he was the one who trained him.

2023-07-21 18:47:42 +0000 UTCAs he comes to in the end, it probably was/is a function of survival. I guess as society has developed, we've outsourced an increasing amount of our security, to the point where our natural instincts don't match the kind of response that's actually most useful.

2023-07-21 18:45:28 +0000 UTCBeing a "scary" person is often mistaken for commanding respect, so it's nice how Yukimura calls out the illusion of "scary" being a compliment of sorts.

2023-07-21 18:21:30 +0000 UTCEvery time I read anything from Yukimura I'm reminded how when people were calling him the GOAT online he thought it was an insult at first like they were calling him the animal, only to find out they were calling him the greatest of all time and felt super appreciative. This man is a global treasure

2023-07-21 18:10:23 +0000 UTCYukimura Twitter thread for 2x12 (some really great discussion points in this one) “Thanks for watching Vinland Saga season 2 Episode 12 everyone! Thorgil and Olmar you’ve finally done it. Amazing, but is it okay? I mean can this be broadcasted? Human beings were split in two. Thank you again, anime staff. I see you did it with a two handed sword. I had you take care of the mistake I neglected. It’s different from the era of Fist of the North Star. Right now, it’s better not to split your characters in two in anime or manga. As much as possible. But to me it’s not okay to smash ghosts, monsters, and zombies. Even in modern times, humans are messing around with each other. Above all, the Vikings have a different way of thinking about murder and honour, compared to modern humans. For example, in the Viking age, if a murderer paid money to the victim’s bereaved family, he would not be charged with murder. “I will pay for my life.” It’s very expensive, but if you’re ready to pay, you can kill. Scary! Throughout human history, ‘violence’ and ‘honour’ are too closely related and inseparable elements. Especially for men. If you are disrespected, arm yourself, intimidate, and intimidate people around you so as not to be underestimated. Preserve honour with violence. What an idiot, man. And you don’t realise you’re stupid. There are men who enjoy being evaluated as “scary”. Someone who wants to be told by others, “That person is scary, don’t make them angry.” I don’t know why, isn’t it better to be a person who smiled and is kind and makes people around you feel relaxed? I want to be a kind person. It doesn’t matter if you make fun of me. But 1000 years ago, people with violent abilities probably had a higher chance of survival. It would have been the end if it was neglected. As Thorgil says, insults are expensive. What about modern times? After hiding all their identity and name, people write bad words about others on the internet using a pseudonym. People stopped paying for insults… it may not be as good.”

2023-07-21 17:58:47 +0000 UTCI wonder how Thorkell is feeling seeing Thorgil steal his bloodshed screen time while he's off screen somewhere drinking and whining about Canute.
