@UndeadDesk While I agree for the most part, I don’t think that it’s about whether they love the sport or not. I don’t think that just because Kindaichi was angry at Kageyama as a middle schooler or not having the same ego Kageyama had means he doesn’t love volleyball. In some ways, I think his love for volleyball caused his grudge. Kunimi, who is less enthusiastic about volleyball, seems to not really care too much about what happened in middle school. I think that it is Kindaichi’s love for the sport that made him so bitter towards Kageyama for making him enjoy it less.

To me it always came across like Kageyama has always wanted and tried to be the best and go above everyone else. Thats why he is always fighting. His team in middle school seemed like they were just playing volleyball. Its like in real life sports, you have the greats, and then you have the people on the bench. They both play professionally but who is really in LOVE with the sport

I know Kageyama’s middle school team gets a lot of flack, which I totally get, but they were just middle schoolers. It’s clear from the interactions at the Shiratorizawa camp that Kindaichi, the most antagonistic, was pretty much past the whole thing and seems to care for Kageyama, and Kunimi (the guy that doesn’t put in a lot of energy) wasn’t holding any beef at all.

Loved this reaction. The themes you touched on this reaction and the whole "Kageyama situation" this episode has been a part of my life that I have constantly and still am struggling with. I really like how you articulated it in the reaction and the comparison to the Todou and Yuji relationship was really interesting. Thanks for the great reaction and I always look forward to having my dinner and watching some great Mr.Goodwin content!

I love that Hinata is the only one that can pick out Kageyama's mistakes because of their special partnership as well as Hinata's intuition/love for the game.

The biggest reason Kageyama was so antsy and upset was because he just got out of a camp with the best high school players in Japan. They don't have the bad habits and idiosyncracies that some of the Karasuno players might have. For example, we saw how Kageyama internalized that one player who made a dig and then immediately got out of the way for the back row attackers, but Nishinoya, after performing the rolling thunder, just stayed there. Kageyama had never really had a reference point before to notice that glaring issue before, but now he could tell that Nishinoya was limiting Kageyama's attacking options. Obviously, Kageyama didn't frame it correctly, but Nishinoya being a champ, understood immediately and didn't let it get to him. Ukai also mentioned that since Kageyama was so skilled, he was able to accommodate the team's bad habits (i.e., being a goody-two-shoes), rather than performing at his best and forcing the team to meet his skill level (being the king of the court). Again, not an issue when you're teamed up with the best high schoolers in the nation, but another thing entirely when he comes back to his own team. As you mentioned, any other team than Karasuno would hate Kageyama for that, but this team is one that is willing to meet the challenge. Tsukki is a prime example by hitting the ball where Kageyama set it, rather than where he's used to hitting from. It's funny how Hinata is the one that can be the emotional bridge between the team and Kageyama, and it's probably because of him that they didn't spiral. Hinata is superhuman in athletic ability, but lacking in practical skill, so he was probably the only person with the energy and passion that could've diffused the situation the way he did. He also turned the 'King' narrative for Kageyama that no one else really could have. Love to see it.

I agree with the Shiratorizawa pick. His energy seems like a good fit for Ushiwaka

I think this episode contrasts Oikawa and Kageyama quite nicely. If you remember back in episode 23 of season 2, we get a flashback to Oikawa and Kindaichi practicing, Kindaichi doesn't think he can hit a certain set, but Oikawa tells him that he thinks he can do it. Then in the game they do pull off that spike, Kageyama sees and notes that it isn't something Kindaichi could do in junior high when he was the one setting to him. Kageyama used to just set it to what he thought a person should be capable of, then had to learn to meet people where they are, and now he has reached the next stage of his journey where he can again start trying to draw out peoples true abilities, but do it the right way. Oikawa told him to listen to his spikers, but Kageyama took that as "just set them tosses that they want" instead of "work with your spikers to maximize their ability." It's been a long, painful road for him to get to this point, and it' far from over, but this marks a huge step in Kageyama's journey.

Love this episode and it helps cement the team's relationship so much more. I think Karasuno's the best team for Kageyama since it has a good balance of kind, caring yet assertive 3rd years in Daichi and Asahi, dependable and straightforward 2nd years in Noya and Tanaka and competitive, "no shit taking" confrontational 1st years in Hinata and Tsukki. Like Hinata said, they can fight and Kageyama has every right to criticise his teammates whenever he wants, but they demand mutual respect and the team also has every right to decide whether they appreciate Kageyama's demands and criticisms or not. It's so heartwarming seeing Kageyama getting the love and support he deserves from the team and how they're not afraid to call him out when he oversteps, just like family. Also seeing Kageyama struggle to navigate through his communication and "understanding people" skills in the second half is so funny and sweet. Seeing all this, if there wasn't Karasuno which team do you think he would have been able to reach his optimal self in- Seijoh, Shiratorizawa Or Date tech? While I don't think he would get the same sort of support as he has in Karasuno, I feel like Shiratorizawa would have been the second best team to push him to be his best potential as a setter, as there are equally assertive and competitive players on the team. But really, it's almost serendipitous how all the events led him to Karasuno as I believe it's here that he's able to grow to the fullest in all aspects in a loving, supportive and nurturing environment.

Bighead

I think Kageyama just needs time to mature emotionally. I feel like him and Ushijima have the same way of being blunt and straightforward but Kageyama tend to lash out while Ushijima is just you knoooow Ushijima haha... But honestly you're right kudos to Karasuno for being THAT kind of team.

Always reminds me of what Daichi said about him in Noya’s introduction episode 1x8 “Noisy, isn’t he? But his playing style is surprisingly… quiet.” Noya really does have a lot of maturity to him.

Sacha

One of my favorite small details about this episode is Nishinoya. He's so loud and confrontational that you expect them to fight, but as soon as he realizes what Kageyama meant he just says "gotcha" and works to apply Kageyama's feedback. It really made me respect Noya more

Love this ep can’t wait for Vinland episode 9 as well :)
